I've been wanting a 2.8 70-200 lens for quite a while now. My camera is a Sony A99 (fullframe) and I've been looking at the sony g2 which is a lot of money! Is it worth it? I look at the Tamron which is 1/2 the price of the Sony and keep asking myself... Is it worth it? I have not found a review that compares the newer model g2 sony lens to the tamron. The only review that I've found is the sony G1 version of the lens which was $1000 cheaper and very hard to find anymore... HELP!!!!

Well...I know some reviewers that have great things to say about the Tamron - although in the Canon mount. Bryan over at http://www.the-digital-picture.com has nice things to say about the Tamron. And Dustin Abbott not only gave it great reviews he shoots with one on his Canon 6D (Dustin Abbott.com). As with any third-party lens there are always caveats. Typically the OEM lenses hold resale value better - especially the high-dollar/professional models. But unless you are a working professional I don't think you'll notice a difference in quality. The main t-p lens manufacturers also seem very good and adept at helping people address specific lens/camera body issues that come up (i.e. Tamron, Sigma, Tokina). In any regard, good luck with your decision. Either way you'll be pleased.

I have the Sony mount version of the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. It is tack sharp & very smooth. I use it on my Alpha 850. The only thing I don't like about it is, it's too short for a lot of wildlife work.

Hey thanks for the info! I want it primarily for portraits and other indoor events.. Then someday I'm going to look at the 150-600 either sigma or tamron! I hear good things about them as well!

I just added a shot of our 14 year old Rag Doll cat, Samantha. Taken indoors available light. ISO 3200, 1/45, f/8 handheld. It's a bit noisy but, you can count the hairs on her ears.

If your lighting is good and you need that kind of focal length, it's a great lens. I too and going to acquire the 150-600. That will probably be my next GAS attack.
