Hi guys,

this is my first topic, although have been viewing for a couple of months now, and find it really valuable. Have returned to photography over the last couple of years, and am really enjoying my D7100, but I do have a query. I recently was informed that I should turn off the VR on my lenses before turning off my camera, is this right? First I've heard of it if it is true. From London UK by the way, nice to talk to you guys!

I never turn mine off, doesn't seem to affect anything. D7000.

1st off, welcome to the Hog. You'll find lots of friends & plenty of good advice here. You'll find the general recommendation is to turn VR off if you're mounting your camera on a tripod. Otherwise, leave it turned on. Don't worry about turning it off if all you're doing is changing lenses.

I Think that the only time you need to turn off VR is when you mount the camera on a tripod or other stable device. VR is counter productive then and actually can add issues to the image as it is trying to eliminate vibration and motion that isn't there. Also, note that the blur may not be noticeable until you put the images on your computer or other large display as the image on the LCD may not be big enough to see it. (unless you use the + magnifier and blow up portions of the picture to check. So the best habit is turn it off when installing on a tripod. Turn it back on when removing from the tripod. That way you don't get halfway through your next hand held shoot and remember that it is still off.

Hi Del-Boy,
I've not heard that before - I've never made it a point to shut mine off because I'm turning off the camera.

And,
Welcome to the Force...

You have entered an addictive land of truths, myths, fantasies, ghosts, goblins and good old fashioned advice (whether you want it or not)...

Seriously though - the folks here have lots of good advice and a couple of days of experience and are willing share what they can - don't hesitate to ask detailed questions, in fact, the more details, the more accurate the answer ;)

A couple of links to help you navigate the forum and some resources to hopefully answer your questions or guide you in your quest...

Looking forward to seeing some of your photos.

Not necessary to turn off VR before turning off camera.

This is from the Nikon manual:

Do not turn the camera off or remove the lens from the camera while vibration
reduction is operating. Failure to observe this note could result in the lens
sounding and feeling as if an internal component is loose or broken when it is
shaken. This is not a malfunction. Turn the camera on again to correct this.

I concur with wolfman and the manual. As a computer guy, I don't like assembling or disassembling components when they are turned on, just a good rule of thumb. Go into your profile and add your UK locations so we can always see which side of the pond you are on. Welcome aboard!

No. It is a silly misunderstanding of Nikon's poor wording.

Guys, this has been really informative, thanks to all for the feedback, and the welcome. Really looking forward to taking part. Decided to leave VR on when simply changing lenses, seems to have done no harm so far. Didn't know about turning it off when mounting on a tripod though. Good advice all round!

Welcome to the Hog Farm!

Your query sounds like hog wash to me.
Check with your camera manufacturer, and check with your lens manufacturer.
If they don't concur, whom ever told you that is drinking piss beer.

(I'm an American, and a Californian (gasp!), so I know my piss beers very well.)

VR does nothing anyway, I just leave it off.

It is recommended that the Camera be turned off when changing lenses, or the SD Card.

Again, read the manual. It concurs.

Welcome to the Hogg! The only time I physically turn off the VR is when I have it on a tripod as VR produces a minute vibration which is how it compensates for hand-held camera shake. Therefore on a pod you won't want it producing vibrations because that is the reason for the pod in the first place. To keep the camera still.
When changing lenses merely turn off the camera and that will "park" the VR motor.
