Outstanding shots of a beautiful scene, Geoff. Tough luck for those geese, a bad day to go for a swim, lol.
Excellent work!
It is a bit lovely, and quite a dark history for such a beautiful place, The earliest record from 1137 gives the owner of the estate as Lambert De Scoteni.Roger Ashburnham is Credited with building the original Castle c. 1378-80.
Catholic Recusant owner Thomas Darwell hid Father Richard Blount in the Castle while he administered to Roman Catholics from 1591 to 1598. Catholicism was highly illegal in England and during the second raid to arrest Father Blount he fled over the wall and into the moat to escape.
In 1778 Edward Hussey bought the estate and castles and his Grandson, also Edward built the New on to of the hill. The stone was quarried from the slopes below the castle. The Quarry is now a garden and contains the 100 million year old impression of a Dinosaurs footprint.
On the death of Christopher Hussey in 1070 he left the estate to the National Trust. Several apartmentsÂ’ in the Castle were let out by the trust and one tenants was The Prime Minister Margret Thatcher, who rented the Belfry in the 1970 & 1980 as a weekend escape for Westminster life.
Thanks for your feedback jederick,
