I asked my insurance agent about liability insurance to cover me while working. I was quoted about $80.00 per month. I was wondering of those that work regularly as a photographer, who carries it and how much.

I think thats high but we are in different countries so hard to compare, if you are wanting to shoot large private events such as F1 I don't think you will be able to get trackside without it. There was a case of a paparazzi type knocked in to an old lady, felling her and doing serious damage while trying to shoot someone coming out of a building, the old lady was awarded serious damages. Thing is it shouldn't be very high premium as photography generally isn't considered risky you should get a quote from a specialist insurer.

I have a State Farm general business policy which includes $2,000,000 in liability for $78 a month.

If you are a member of a professional photographers association or group, I would check with them for group rates / discounts...

If you're a pro and a member of PPA, check with their member services folks. I'm sure they offer liability insurance. If you're not a pro, check with your homeowners/renters insurance carrier. $80.00 sounds rather on the high side. Make sure you're not insuring filters & other items of minor value that can drive up the cost.

We have insurance for ACT (Artists, Crafters, and Tradesman) administered through Veracity Insurance Solutions in Pleasant Grove, Utah. It provides $1,000,000 liability. It also includes our Inland Marine policy. My art, booth, (off premises and in transited) are covered. We carry the liability to protect us in case somebody trips and breaks their leg in my booth. We pay $265 per year.

My policy is for $1,000,000 Liability plus $125,000 "Business Equipment" and runs $692 per year for the package. (My Jeep is included in the business equipment as the primary mode of transport for the covered equipment).

Our policy would cost more if the trailer we use to carry our show set-up was included, but we cover that through our normal auto insurance provider. Admittedly, my case may be a bit different than many other photographers in that I am strictly selling fine art at festivals. I'm not going to get sued by Bridezilla. I need to cover my trailer, the possible replacement of my inventory in case of an accident while in transit or at a show, and liability in case someone gets hurt in my booth and decides to sue me. I'm sure that photographers who are more service oriented (weddings, family portraits, photos of people cats) may have additional needs, but the important point is, if you are in business, cover your buns by having the right policy to protect yourself!

You need two - one for liability (errors and omissions) and one for your gear. $80/mo sounds about right but without the details it is hard to evaluate and compare.

liability insurance? Or do you mean professional "malpractice" insurance? Liability insurance, yes if you are a news or tabloid, or street photographer. Unless you mean in case someone trips and falls in your studio. Insuring your equipment is another matter and a type of business assets property insurance.

I carry 1Million in liability, and it also covers my camera gear up 30K. I provide a inventory list of my gear including serial numbers and I'm very close to that $$. Cost $600 per year. My insurance company also often supply COIs for location shoots. Liability insurance basically covers me if I throw up a light stand and someone trips on it at the hotel I am working at. The COI covers the hotel it names them as a additional insured up to 1M on my policy. Basically it means I am responsible for the first million in damage. The Caveat is my gear is not covered when I travel out of the country. I have an upcoming trip to New Zealand, and will need to buy a special policy addition.

Don't even think your homeowners insurance will cover you, it won't. And if they find out you are running BUSINESS out of your home, they may cancel you. I had this happen to a friend.

I would ask the agent to explain exactly what they are covering? is gear covered, Liability, COI's.

Unless you notify your home owners that you are running a business, and they probably charge you on a business policy nothing you do there is covered. And in my friends case they were cancelled by homeowners the very day they were named in a law suite. Sued by a client that tripped in their home. $600,000 home lost, all camera equipment had to be sold, boats and cars sold and a 45 year old couple moved back in with parents. 2 years ago, and the lawsuite is still going on, so not sure of the outcome, but one thing I know for sure Homeowners does not cover a business run out of your home!
