Fall Fly Fishing For Steelhead

These are from a trip to the Scott River in northern California to fish for fall run steelhead. This river empties into the Klamath River in the very northern part of California and in some years produces some very nice runs of steelhead. It also has some very low water (almost dried up as you can see) because there is no rain during the summer and the farmers up stream use up most of the available water.

It is located in a very deep and steep canyon for most of it's length and has a lot of very large boulders to negotiate around to access the water for fishing.

I love your pictures. We are moving back to the Four Corners area, so I can fish the San Juan again. I hope to be able to post pictures of "the big one" here later this year. Thanks for the inspirations.

Although you can not see an actual fish fish in the picture, in the second from last picture in the post the man I'm fishing with does have a fish on the line, and it was quickly released so as not to harm the fish. That was the only fish that was hooked that day, even so, it was a nice day of fishing to be out in nature and very far away from civilization and all that entails.

When steelhead or salmon fishing one doesn't always catch fish or even see them because they are migratory and can move up or down stream many, many miles very quickly. Also they some time hold in different parts of the river for long periods of time and the trick is to find them. Another reason one may not catch any is because the numbers of fish have been on the decline for many years for a lot of different reasons.

It is difficult to tell any kind of story like this that encompasses a whole days time and do it justice in such limited space that is allocated here for images.

As far as these images are concerned, my intent was to show the environment that was encountered during the day on that type of river.

That said, I do have many, many more fly fishing trips where fish were caught and pictures taken of them and I will post some at another time. I am going through my collection of images that are on film or slides as well as those that are digital and sorting and organizing them and will put them online either here or with Flickr or some or site in the future.

Glad you liked the pictures.

You have some really great fishing in Idaho, I really had some great fishing on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River at Island Park.
