Conundrum's

I am in a bit of a conundrum. I would likke some ideas from my fellow uhh friends. I have been very busy at work and at home doing home improvements that there is no time for going out and do some shooting.Photography that is. I have some projects lined up for spring and summer but nothing as of late. I am making time this coming Saturday to go out and do some shooting. I will be going to skyline drive and the blueridge parkway here in virginia and do some shooting of the winter landscapes. It took me a while to figuure out what I wanted to shoot. How many of you find yourself realy thinking hard to find what to shoot during the winter months. I can here my gear crying to take me out of this case and put me to use. :? :? I guess you can say a creative block for the first time in 30 plus years of shooting please help. The only thing I do not photograph is people we all know how some react to a camera.

i hate shooter' block, it gnaws at you until you have to shoot something, anything or go nuts.

go for a walk with your camera, take a different route.... look for textures, patterns... anything that you may not have noticed before...

Last year I went just a little more west than you're planning to go. I photographed Mabry's Mill on the Blueridge Parkway and went north from there to Cascade Falls. Cascade Falls is not far from Virginia Tech. Below Cascade Falls is Little Stony Creek. It's beautiful there is the spring.

Winter is a great time to look for silhouettes and shoot black and white.

This is why I moved from the Midwest to Texas 23 years ago! Joking aside, I go out about half the time with a preconceived idea of what I'm going to shoot and many times something interesting pops up that is totally unexpected and is the best shot of the day. I still complete my mission. The other half of the time, it's a more general thing, you can find many subjects just walking around. Sometimes, I limit myself, like restricting myself to things within a block of my house. You'd be amazed at what you might see that's always been right in front of you. Good luck. Happens for me in the winter too. I used to backpack year around and sleep in the snow with only a ground cover and sleeping bag but now can't take the cold. My hands and fingers get too cold to be of any use. So now I look for opportunities to shoot indoors. I spent yesterday photographing my wife's house plants. I have spent days shooting bubbles, practicing macro with various objects and other projects. I look to UHH and YouTube for inspiration. There is always something if you look hard enough. Good luck and pray for an early spring. ;)

I found frozen water on rocks if lighted by sun great opportunity on Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge in winter. Takes a lot of driving to find these nice places.

How many of you find yourself realy thinking hard to find what to shoot during the winter months.
I live on the Chesapeake Bay, about 20 miles south of Annapolis, but you can only take sunrise and sunset pictures for so long. I love the drive to Skyline, just drive slowly through the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is full of spots. Have fun and good luck.

Winter shooting is difficult - things are all so white - there's little contrast.
Still, there are occasional opportunities - a large open field with interesting patterns in the snow. If you find a stream with flowing water there may be interesting patterns in the ice or perhaps some ducks.
I recall some pictures I wanted to take but for one reason or another never did. In one all-white scene, a white horse was standing in a snow-covered field in front of a white barn; it was a beautiful scene and I had my camera with me but there was no place to park my car safely. Another was a very old shed in an open field of snow - again there was a parking problem; I saw this many times but put off the long cold walk too long and the shed is now gone.

Photography subjects are only limited to one's own imagination!
That is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.
Plan ahead for the off seasons...
When the weather is bad try shooting something indoors.
There are many possibilities. Take some macro shots of various objects you find around the house. Try portraits and experiment with lighting, kids family members, friends etc.
Go to your local big box store and ask if you might photograph their flowers? The opportunities are endless...

I never have to go farther than my yard to find photographic subjects. Of course I do go to places specifically to take photos but don't really suffer from lack of subjects right here at home. I just try to look at things from a different perspective.
With winter at your doorstep I would look at patterns of blowing snow, shadows and light scenes, birds, tree bark or possibly lichen on the tree, close ups of flowers etc. I don't know what type photography you are interested in other than landscapes and that is fine but there are other subjects close at hand.

Come on down to New Orleans, we are just starting Mardi Gras. If you can't find something to shoot, you're blind. Can you imagine, they even are going to charge to enter a cemetery just to walk around and look at the tombs. Catch a parade or two each day, one bigger than the one the day before. Oh, the sights you'll see on the streets, you'll have to ice down your lens it'll get so hot. Just the thing for "shooters block" a good Mardi Gras.
