I've been using Fences on my Win7 machine, and I wanted to use it on the Win8.1 computer. Apparently, Win8.1 requires a different version of Fences, and I haven't been able to get it working. The problem seems to be with Windows/Microsoft. It wants me to sign in with my MS account, whatever that is. Win8 gives me a full green screen with no choices other than signing in with MS. I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out of there and go to Task Manager. From there, I can get back to my desktop.

So, is there w way to use Fences Free with Windows 8.1?

When it says to sign in with my account on windows 8 or 8.1 , they want your Hotmail account address and password . If you installed windows 8 with out one , then you will have to get one . Tommy

I don't have a Hotmail account. It was frustrating because I could get a code to get a password, but there was no way to exit that screen and get to email without exiting MS totally. When I finally got the code, of course, I had to start all over again and try to get a new code.

I don't understand why I couldn't install Fences without signing in to MS. I'm not liking Win8.

Hotmail account and password I believe will be necessary in just the same way for Windows 10

I got my free fences installed, but now I can't move the icons. If I make a fence around a group, I can move that group, but not individual icons.

I Googled this problem, and the only solution is to remove Fences. That's why they're charging for the new version.

Try installing using administrator mode or in compatibility mode.

Administrator mode didn't work. I think it's a quick of Fences running on Win8. I can do without it and just organize the icons myself.

There's a free upgrade to 8.1 in the play store however I think you need the windows hotmail Account to access it, Im not sure about that. I use hotmail so I haven't had any problems with my 8.1. I don't like the fact they try to make you sign up for a hotmail account when you get a new computer. You can bypass that during installation.

There are too many user id's and passwords. Drives me crazy. If they all used the same rules,it wouldn't be as bad. Some want both upper and lower case, a number, and a character. Some don't accept a character. Even password savers don't always on some sites.

I'm using both, but I'm more familiar with Windows - at least until Win8.

As I play with Win8, I'm learning how to use it, and I think I think it will do what I want.

You can boot into the desktop by going to control panel, taskbar & Navigation and choose the Navigation tab. Check the box to boot to the desktop. I find the desk top better.
