D300 Doesn't seem to want to capture in 14 bit

I have the image set to raw, and the recording set to 14 bit; however, the images all come out 8 bit. Any suggestions, Hog Gurus?

I can find only 8 & 16 options in ACR.

Adobe Camera Raw.
I forget not everyone uses Photoshop.

Yes, in camera raw there is an info bar highlighted in blue under the preview window. It lets you set the image size, color space and bit depth regardless of what was captured.
Your camera captures in 14 bit, you open in 16 bit. The difference is meaningless for purposes of making regular pictures. I capture in 12bit and open in 16bit, do my work, save Tif in 16 and JPEG in 8bit. You can save JPEG in 16bit with CS5.

I wasn't very clear. I'm talking about setting my Nikon D300 to take raw images in 14 bit. I set the camera shooting menu to raw, and then select 14 bit (the choices are either 8 or 14 bit). Click OK. However, the raw images are 8 bit when I download them from the camera.

What gives? Anyone? Camera malfunction or operator error??

They download in 14bit, your ACR is changing them. You can shoot in 8bit and ACR to 16bit. You don't gain anything, but you can do it.
Check out that drop down menu under the preview window. Blue type that says something like (I'm not at my own computer) "sRGB 8bit 3000x2008 6mp aRGB1998"

Do you mean like fashion or flower photography to show subtle differences in similar color? Or finer gradations in light to dark? Or the worst for me is a clear blue sky, which is so subtle you get a posterized band near the zenith. Low bit depth exacerbates that, high bit depth CAN help. The change from 8bit to 14bit is so big that using 16bit to contain your cameras 12 or 14 bit as a standard package is just fine. Only Digital Backs go to 16bit as far as I know.

I must be losing wattage, my bulb is dimming. I understand raw okay. I guess what I need is a simple tip to correct whatever is occurring.

Let me ask it this way:

How do I set Photoshop CS5 to import my camera raw images, taken on a D300 in 14-bit raw, into my computer in 16-bit, instead of changing them into 8 bit. I generally import in Bridge.

Here are steps to change your working color space from 14-bit to 16-bit in ACR(Adobe Camera Raw)

That is why i switched to Capture NX2. A lot easier to PP nef raw files. i shoot 14-bit raw nefs in my D300 also. But when I open my nefs in Capture NX2 I open it and work in ProPhoto rgb 16-bit working color space.
