Great technology, but the price is a bit high to sell these things in numbers. Is it available yet? I can see there being a practical use for these - changing the focus after the fact.

I was wondering about the depth of field. I haven't seen anyone comment on that in anything I've read.

From what I've seen on their site, DoF looks comparable to regular cameras. Of course, you can put anything in the frame into focus, which would be good for a scene with lots of foreground and background.

It has an f/2 lens and internal storage - no card. The price is a big stumbling block. Now if they offered it for a 30-day trial...

Don't think yet been released to public. So far development costs approaching $50 million so may a wee while before they take their place on the wedding tables of the world. Thought was interesting factory loaded and cannot replace Card. Maybe you will have to send it back to the factory for a refill just like the early Kodak models......another indication of why Kodak went bust. Lack of innovation. Should have been theirs.

I went on Google, typed in Lytro.com and got a lot of information on this camera. Could even try focusing different portions of some pictures they had there. If I clicked on a particular portion of the picture it came ito sharp focus, then click on a different portion and that came into sharp focus. Kinda fun to play with.

I want one, but it's Mac-only for now.

The biggest limitation right now though is the relatively small image size. You have to host your images on their site for anyone viewing them to be able to change focus points. Interesting technology, but not going to replace standard photographic means anytime soon.

As I understand it, you'll be able to post them to Facebook and Twitter, too.

I don't think they're trying to replace conventional photography, at least not yet. It's a toy. That's why it comes in bright colors like red and turquouise. :-)

Of concern is the lack of compatibility with other PP software; must use the Lytro software. Visible image loss when converting to JPEG. Manufacturer is working around some of these issues. May want to hold off just a little longer.

As randy said above, this is never going to be like a conventional camera - too many limitations. This seems like something you would buy, use a few times, and then stick it in a closet. For $50, I might consider it.

Exactly. Great technology for the future but currently, you're rather limited. Yes, the review in the Times explains it all.

I still want one. Not to replace my DSLR, but for fun. I think it would be cool take interactive photos of busy city streets on vacation, or a ballpark full of fans during a baseball game, or room full of people at a party. I'm not expecting to frame the photos or sell them. I just want to post them to my blog and let people play with them.
