Zoom h1 making it useable for beginners

The zoom h1 is pretty nice but there is no wind shield and worst of all the body magnifies every sound. I think i have spent $5 roughly on sorting it out.

Levels suggested is -6 db apparently the best signal to noise ratio is at 37 input working around 40 as a good place to be up to about 60 apparently the h1 changes modes at 36 and trys to cut the signal after its preamped and will sound bad as its already distorted.

Dead cat I found that a pair of fury earmuffs works quite well i used a knife to open up the stitching in order to remove the plastic arm. i did leave stuffing in one which i used for another task.

I had a section of 2inch black drainpipe which makes for quite a good shield i stuffed the backend with the spare ear muff and placed the h1 with muff in the other end. i guess if a drill a hole in the side it might make for a boom mike.

I have a simple flash bracket a 6 inch slotted bar with a couple of tripod screws one of which i attached to the quick release plate of my tripod. screwing directly in to the zoom 1 a great idea. the camera becomes a sound board for the mic.

most designs for shock mounts are basically a cage mounting the mike with rubber bands.

I found a idle cage was a bike lamp which i'd bought for a euro found fell apart as i put batteries in and i'd had to tape together to make it usable in any form.

The bottom half made a sort of wide u shape and i hooked a wide rubber band around it this gave me a rubber platform for the zoom 1 and a couple of rubber bands around the zoom h1 and the lamp casing hold the zoom h1 and isolates it pretty much from the rest of the rig. Maybe not too pretty but effective and cheap.
