keh.com has D300 bodies for just under $500. Do you already have the lens you want?

I wish he had given us the info instead of changing the question after he posted it.
That way I wouldn't have looked stupid when I answered the question he asked instead of the question he changed it to.
He has a Tamron 150-600mm.

Neither of the posts were questions.
What is the question?
What is stopping you from searching for the camera you know you want, in the price range that you want?
Programs/websites don't come much more user friendly than Google.

If you do have a question why couldn't you have actually asked it and provided any relevant information.
What is so hard about typing .....
"I have a Tamron 150-600mm that i have been using with a Nikon D40.
I would like to upgrade to a Nikon D300.
I have $500 to spend.
Can any of you recommend a reputable seller that may be able to help me out?"

Geez, its like pulling teeth sometimes.

It is a world of texting and tweeting now. Only so many words so you have to read between the lines. Oh, instant gratification too.

Just a general observation ...

Keh.com

Crop sensor 1.5 x will turn 600 to 900 mm
Focus motor

Get a sandisk extreme pro for bird shooting.

D7000 for $460

That's what I'm doing but with a 150-500mm for the glass.

Sorry, no, it will not change the focal length.
It will always be a 600mm but have equivalent angle of view as a 900mm on a full frame camera.
The focal length of lenses is measured the same way no matter what size sensor they will be used with.
The view will be exactly the same as the one the OP is already getting with his/her D40, which is also an APS-C sensor.
That being said, maybe someday we will see some sort of shorthand like: "600mm (900mm)" or some similar annotation so we know the "actual mm and (ff mm)" equivalent on a given camera.

I agree, KEH is a great place to buy used. This LINK will take you straight to the D300 selection.
In good light, the D300 is a great camera. I still use mine.
:D

That equivalency crap doesn't even compute with me.
I use a 150-600mm lens on a D3300, and I get what I get.
I don't live in the past, I live in the now. ;)

Oh, and I don't load black powder either. I use smokeless propellants.
But that's another story... :hunf:

I'd like to get a D90 to mount my Macro lens on, and leave it there.
Can I get a D90 body for the change in my pocket?

PS: Welcome to the hog farm, htsmith. ;)

Exactly! I don't know why people bring it up when the question isn't asked.
Half of the time, they get it wrong.
The OP may have no experience with a full-frame or 35mm anyway.

Geez, Lighthouse cries that the OP doesn't give enough information and then you cry that responses give too much information. People have gotten over the crop factor focal length terminology correction habit, well most have but there are still a few that need to provide commentary. Put up a sticky that gives a "sentence" that everyone likes and we can all use that to make everyone happy.

The OP buys a 150-600 Tamron which is for the express purpose for most people of shooting birds, etc and as the OP notes wildlife. So he's buying to to get as close as possible. Some say walk in to get the shot, eh, walk in with a boat in a bird sanctuary ... so the alternative is long glass. The OP is on a budget he wants as much as he can get so a crop sensor will get him closer than a full frame. A good full frame he won't get at that price and he doesn't need it. The D7000 is his best choice all around in my opinion. The D300 is a good body but he might as well step into a more modern body with more megapixels, which will help if he needs to crop, which he most likely will. D300s, sure but at the price he needs it at?

The KEH D7000 bodies, or any of the others are available now. No wondering is this eBay seller selling a damaged unit.

Do I guess the response to the OP's original question should have been:

D7000

Which ties into what I said to Lighthouse which is that everyone wants to use "text and tweet" even in other environments. I guess that will have to do.
