When using a Kowa 6 I had a focus screen with the 8x10 & 11x14
framing lines on it, can one get these for digital screens?

Why would you want them? Filling the frame is a reasonable rule when we shot chromes for projection, but now you leave enough space around the subject so you can crop it to whatever size you want to print or display in some form. Framing is consider when shooting a digital image but the resulting image is created/formatted/composed on the computer. If I am missing the point, I am sorry.

Depending on your camera, but yes. You can get replacement focusing screens for your camera with a variety of etchings on them depending on what you want.

Yes, you are.

I think it would be a well-accepted addition to the firmware of all digital dSLRs so it would assist the operator in "considering the framing" during composition. When a frame is overfilled with subject in the 8X12 format of a dSLR, it's difficult to get an 8X10 out of it during post editing. If there was a line frame option on the function button to show guides for different sizes of desired print it would be quite helpful. It can't hurt the file when turned on because it's just a guide so why not?

Well, it's not a function of the firmware (well, I guess it could be in liveview). It's what's etched on the focusing screen.

Live view and review having the line frames would be just fine for me. Besides, I have an electronic viewfinder and LCD screen so firmware is the only option anyway.

As to why - I found the guides very helpful in learning and applying composition to an image. The 8x10 as far as I know is still the best size for households to display and for portfolio and albums, of important images, so any help I can get I want.
Thanks for the link.
Thanks for the input. :-)
