The new one 70-300 VR is better at $550, depends on your wallet. The 80-400 VR is better at around $2500, the 200-400 VR is much better at around $6000. If you are using a DX (crop sensor camera) the 80-400 along with a 1.4 (+) tell extender ($500 more) should give you a nice set up.

Any of the available super zooms would do the trick.
Sigma 150-500mm OS
Sigma 50-500mm OS
Sigma 150-600mm Sport OS
Tamron 150-600mm VC

Forget using any TC on a variable aperture lens, its very seldom worth the trouble.

The issues are pretty much all limited to Canon bodies. I have seen no problems with my Nikon bodies, nor have I seen reports of others with problems on Nikons. I sell and rent the Tamrons in my store and have yet to have anyone locally complain, except for one buyer with a 6D and a 7D, the lens is great on the 6D but searches a lot on her 7D.

I know your using a Nikon, but I have the Sigma 150/500 on My Canon and love it. Have not had any trouble it.

What really surprised Me was the weight (Don't know the exact weight) it's NOT as heavy as it looks like it would be.

Just in case you are considering the 70-300, I just put mine on ebay and right now, it is going for cheap. Auction ends tomorrow at around 4:30pm. If interested, you might take a look and pick this one up for less than $300. It is sharp and no problems. I would much rather see a Hog member get the deal on this lens. I have the 70-200 and the 300 prime and just didn't use this lens anymore. It has a Tiffen UV filter included with sale.
On the long end, with your DX camera, the view is 450mm.

What is the minimum focus distance on that lens?

It's a 70-300 f4.5-5.6 AF-S G with VR. On a DX camera, the 70 becomes 105mm of view and the 300 becomes 450.
This is a FX lens and one of Nikon's best, in my opinion.
