I came across this website and my initial perusal piqued my interest so I decided to join. I have seen many pleasing and very friendly posts. I am completely new to any type of forum so please excuse me if I stumble and fall a lot. I have been interested in photography for a number of years and took an introductory course about 20 years ago. I was quite active for a number of years, mostly just personal photos for scrapbooking purposes. I went from a Canon EOS 650 to the Canon EOS 20D. Experiencing some mechanical difficulties with the camera I decided to check Ebay for a comparison of repair costs vs. body replacement. I ended up purchasing the Canon EOS 50D and expect to receive it any day now.

For the first time I have also invested in filters other than a UV. I have a lot of learning to do in a short period of time, as I very recently accepted an invitation to visit Alaska. I am hoping to get some tips and suggestions on how to optimize my stagnant and somewhat forgotten skills so as to capture photos of a lifetime from the trip of a lifetime.

I am looking forward to interacting with new found contacts and forming new relationships as I begin winding down towards retirement and gearing up for new adventures.

Welcome to the forum. It is quite easy to navigate and post photos. As for tips and such. This is a very good place to be. I learn something almost every day. If you check "store original" when posting it will post a photo that has greater detail than the thumbnail and allow members to get a better look at your photo. It will also allow members to download your photo and make edits for the purpose of demonstration. Go ahead and post some photos we would love to see them.

Welcome to the Hog, Diana. Click on User List at the top of this page in blue. When you get to that page type in Blacks1. His photos of Alaska are beautiful and may give you some ideas. You could also send him a Private Message, also at the top of this page, and tell him where you will be and ask him for suggestions for places to shoot. ;)

Thanks to Mac, David and Rocco for the welcome! Rocco, dysfunctional is my middle name!

David, thanks for the tip. I'm going to check out Blacks1 in just a moment. One of the tour companies I was checking out listed a photo tour which is run by Ian Johnson (www.ianajohnson.com). This man has some awesome photos and videos posted! His blog indicates his favorite spot to photo
the auroras is in the black spruces. I'm eager to check out Blacks1. Thanks for the tip!!!!
