I want to convert my photos and negatives to digital. I've started looking at scanners and I'm finding a lot to choose from. I would like recommendations from anyone on what to look at and what to stay away from.

Check out the Epsons, particularly the V330 and the V500 Photo models. I use the V500 with up to 9600x9600dpi resolution for all my 35mm and medium format scanning.

How well does the V500 do at scanning negatives?

I purchased the Espon v330 about two months ago to scan my slides and negative. I went with the v330 as I only have 35mm. So far I have scanned 2700 images and have been very pleased with the results. Most of what I am scanning are "family pics" and although I can scan at 9600 I found that 4600 is more than adequate for what I am doing. I also purchased it refurbished from epson. Good, fast service and have had no problems with the unit.

MT...Once the negative has been scanned, at what point is it turned into a positive? Is that with Photoshop? I have boxes of negatives that need to be scanned.

The scanner software automatically "develops" the negative when you scan it via its recgnition software. You select "Color Negative Film" in the scan tool window and the scanner does the rest, what you get as an import is a positive scan. There is no need to convert anywhere.

You can also select B&W negative film, it will do black and white also.

The V330 is only for 35mm and photos. The V500 adds medium format size.

Epson is the way to go. Even my Epson all-in-one does a great job scanning prints when using advanced settings. That higher end model is that much better I'm sure & scans of full 12" prints would be great.
