Nice captures, the last picture looks like the freighter is leaving a large wake. What's the river traffic speed?
The tugs average 6 to 10 knots
I just checked the Maryland down at NY harbor and sais 16 knots
Thanks for the information. I do not know how does container ships make any money, this one looks empty.
This is not a container ship it is a bulk carrier thats different. Container ships are to big for river work. Go to marinetraffic to see the difference. Check differance by tagging ships
Thanks for the link, I check it out and seen some differences although will need to do further research.
Did you check my website? The bridges determine the height of the ships that can come up river. Here in New York its the Tappan Zee with a clearance of 138 feet.

great set first one I have ever seen amazing
Nice ship photos. Sometimes I miss my freighter days. Non container, an old fashioned cargo ship. A little larger than the one you captured here, 3 holds forward of the house and 2 holds aft. I understand the need for the modern huge container ships, but I don't find them very pretty. Also, how do you know he is headed for Charleston
If you go to marine traffic and tag a ship a box opens with picture of ship and vitals. The box ever gives destination.Try it
color code green bulk carrier red tanker not hard to determine.
I thought about going to sea but an uncle who was a merchant captain discouraged it. He was will aware how much time away from home
Good shots, mwoods222! I like how #2 is framed by the bridge.

Thank, I will check it out. Your uncle is right, you don't get home very much, but, it was fun for a few years.
