Is this lens long enough to be used as a portrait lens? I trying to decided whether to purchase this lens or the 70-200mm first.

It all depends on if you are using it on a full frame or crop sensor camera. I sometimes use mine for portraits on my D610, but I prefer to use a 100mm or longer lens. I learned, years ago when I shot film, that my 105mm Ais Micro-Nikkor gave me the best looking portraits with my FE-2 and FM-2's. That said, the 24-70 does stay on my FF camera most of the time.

It is long enough. I've been waiting for Nikon to update that lens to include VR. I'd like to get one. They may never update it since the 24-120mm f/4 has VR.

I have the 85mm 1.8 and it works great! Sharper than either you mentioned and one quarter the price. 105mm I believe is typical for portrait focal length.

No, not really. The 70-200 f/2.8 is a fantastic portrait lens. Images (portraits) should be made from 15' to 9' from subject.

David - tho I don't necessarily agree with that 'rule', the portrait you posted was superb! Very nice work, sir!

That is a very nice shot, David. My only criticism is the square catch lite reflections in her pupils. I know that I am nitpicking, but I find them distracting. A professional of your calibre should know better.

That's the lust distance. I do portrait at about 6ft and they don't look as attractive.

That was the shape of the soft box on her right side. It was a one light shot with a reflector on her left side. I am an amateur and only shoot for my pleasure. Therefore, I make lots of mistakes and usually on a daily basis. I do appreciate your critique though.

Heck, the catch light can be fixed in post, myself being a landscape/outdoor photographer I think you did a great job with this photo.

I agree it is a nice shot. The rectangular catchlight does not bother me.
If David were using natural window light, the shape would be rectangular too. Sure, the sun and moon are round but they would be so small in a reflection that you would not notice the shape.

As far as the 24-70 for portraits go, for full-frame, I think is a bit short.
Great lens though. I do not miss having VR on it. VR isn't as useful with shorter focal lengths.

the 85mm or 105mm are considered good portrait choices but the 24-70 softens up a touch at 70mm and does a fine job.
