What do you think? Taken with Canon EOS 60D in P mode, no flash, 18-135mm stand zoom lens. Bumped up the exposure compensation to +1. I have since learned that I can improve these types of sessions, if I use a 50mm 1.8 lens which should allow for a closer shot with more blownout backgrounds. I've borrowed one for the next time to see if I should purchase one.

I love these pictures. I have two grand daughters that are 8 and 4 months old. You captured finding the little toes perfectly. Beautiful!!!

Cute.

There is visible camera shake in #4 and #5.

#1 the flower looks "weird" not sure what's going on.

None of them displays a great amount of sharpness. In portraits, we expect the eyes to be very sharp and other features can blur but the eyes have to be there.

So in the future, focus on the eyes specifically and your shots will be much better.

I would agree that the overall sharpness of these is not what it could be. I think you would benefit from learning how to shoot in Manual mode and getting out of the auto features. The auto modes are not "automatically" correct and these pictures attest to that. If you are shooting with a 1.8 lens (I shoot newborns and children often with my 50mm 1.4) you have to be very careful to watch what is in focus with such a shallow depth of field if you are shooting wide open. You might also want to see which AF sensors you have activated and make some adjustments there. Shot #2 has the best clarity, but it looks like you focused on her ear and already her eyes and lips have a softer focus. Again, the depth of field is very shallow so you need to be mindful of what IS in focus and is that where you want to draw the viewer to first?

For the really clear close up shots of eye lashes, fingers, toes, etc, you really need a macro lens. I've seen some good pictures from people who can capture sharp images of some tiny toes close up, but it is difficult in experienced hands.

You are on the right path, but I would recommend you keep studying while clicking away! Good luck to you!
