Hi everyone - I'm not "heavy" into this stuff, and certainly not on any ego trip, but simply want and try to improve. And it's nice to make the occasional contribution here ! This pic is of me, at home, in natural light (through a slit in my curtain) with my Fuji X-T1 and 18-55mm "kit" lens, on tripod, at 28mm, using the Fuji "Camera Remote" app on my android phone. All major settings, apart from lens zoom, can be controlled from the phone app.

Shot in RAW at f4, 1/500 sec, ISO 200 and, as mentioned, on a tripod..... and real Russian vodka in the glass !

Nice thing about the X-T1 (EVF of course) is that you can see the final result BEFORE you hit the shutter - terrific control over the shot allowing one to compose exactly the way one desires.

Minimal processing in Lightroom - a little clarity and vibrance, but not much, and then sharpening, which is necessary.

OK folks ..... tell me what you all think.

I think it is excellent, perhaps a little more light in your eyes would be beneficial but apart from that I can only think of one more thing. You need more colour in the glass, an nice single malt would accomplish that ;)

Hey Graham - thanks buddy - no idea (at my ability level) how to put more light in my eyes ...... I'll be honest and say that I don't want to alter the original, but I understand and appreciate your comment about "colour" in the glass and would be quite content to exchange the vodka for a fine shot of The Macallan !

I like the lighting coming from the side, especially for a man's portrait. I do wish the light was more even, however. Was the light being filtered through tree leaves outside or through a lace curtain? It seems like dappled light. I like the camera's perspective much better in this one than the one you used for your avatar. I think that the perspective you used for your avatar has distorted your face. The only other thing that I see that would improve is if you angled yourself so that the non wood wall was behind you instead of the wood meeting the non wood wall right at the center of your head. It is a distracting line that a portrait photogrpapher would want to avoid. I think if you sat at that angle, the light from the window would create those catchlights in your eyes.

And all that from somebody that rarely shoots people ... So .. take it for what it's worth. Hope it helps and start a new thread if you do a new improved version. It would be fun to see it.

Hi Sandra - long time no see ! Congrats not only on your control and management of this section, but also on your own improving skills - lovely to see you "grow" - now then, this pic - small lounge at home, light from left through the normal (well English) lace curtains ! You deal with light as it presents itself. Still have my Nikon D700, but also loving the control given by the Fuji EVF over ANY composition situation. Not sure what you mean by what's happening at the centre of my head ..... all looks pretty dark to me ..... but I'm not worried, and ready for anything you wanna throw at me. It's why I dared put up my pic ! Happy weekend to you, your family, and this group.

Changed my avatar - always listen to pretty women !

I like the exposure, the scarcity of light combined with the detail is interesting. More color in the glass I agree.
Personally I would keep the aspect ratio the same, but crop the top and left down until the white object showing above your head is gone.
You appear to be falling out of the frame bottom left, and this action would end that.
I don't see any benefit of having all that space at the top, and left anyway having you so centered is not a benefit.

I apologize sir.
I meant falling out right...big difference!
I didn't find that the white spot was so much distracting, as it was a point of reference on how much to remove equally top, and left border.
You have cropped considerably more than I intended here on this edit, while also changing the aspect ratio of the crop to be narrower.
I liked the more square version you had in your original one, just not quite so much space around left, and top.
Didn't mean to confuse.
Really like everything else about the image.

We're all in this together !

Still don't understand "falling out right".

All this stuff about "aspect ratio" is not important. I simply cut out parts of the pic. You either "like" the changes or not.

Probably "falling out right" seems a bit strong to you.
I Don't mean it to seem such.
I wanted to send a PM to you with my version of a crop, but I see no way to send photos in PMs.
Seems we need that feature here as not to break rules, or upstage people simply growing, and sharing.
When I did the crop, I made a few other adjustments that came in view.
I darkened a few bright areas, and brought up some shadows to add dimension.
Also I cloned out a half cropped piece of your jacket I caused in the cropping.
(The photo lost saturation of color in the process)
