A Google search yielded this:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I'm sorry to hear that your EOS 10D is displaying an "ERR 99" message.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.

If the "ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the "ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.

For factory service, forward your digital camera (remove the CF card and battery) properly packaged and insured, with a letter describing the difficulties. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, and proof of warranty (if applicable). Send to the Canon Factory Service Center at the following address:

It simply could be you are not giving your camera enough time to write to the card (expecially if you are shotting RAW or RAW+jpeg) or if you are using the on camera flash you are not giving it enough time to cycle between pressing the shutter button.

Boy I looked on Google and didn't find that info so I went to Canon and they in some sense told me to do some of the same but not to the detail you have provided. I only use the lens that came with the camera 18 to 55 IS and a Tamron 18 to 250 so I will ahve to chesk this out and see where it takes me. I have almost 8000 pics on the current card maybe that is the problem as I do take the card out to download the pics as I find it quicker to do it through explore in windows rather than giong through the camera if that is not a good thing to do I can do it ther traditional way. Your thoughts and Thanks for the info.

How fast is your card ??? Perhaps if you are shooting multiple pictures in rapid succesion the camera cannot write to the card fast enough and the buffer is filled.

To check this try shooting smaller images on a faster card and see if you get the same error.

Please repost if you get a fix to this so we all can learn from the solution..............

YIKES !!!! 8000 images on your card is asking for a disaster. If that card is lost or malfunctions you have lost a lot of effort in shooting.

The card is a Trandsend class 10 8GB and I take the pictures off the card each time I shoot pics. I don't download through the camera I take the card out and put it in the reader because it is much quicker. The card has had about 8000 images written to it and deleted so other can be put on. This did happen while using a flash and some one suggested that I was taking the pics to quickly so I will slow down the next time when using the flash and see what gives. Note this has never happened when the flash was not in use so this could be the problem.

Hi. My name is Rick and I'm a camera repair technician.

Error 99 is a general purpose error code that simply means there is something wrong with the camera.

Today's cameras are designed to interface with a computer using diagnostic software to read and interpret the internal error codes. Your camera will probably need to repaired by a qualified technician. I would recommend Metro Camera in Englewood, CO. They have all the software necessary to diagnose and repair the camera, as well as fully trained technicians and are factory authorized for all the major manufacturers.

Rick I appreciate the imformation you provided me on repair of the Canon Xsi. I hooked the camera up to the computer and ran diagnostics on the camera and everything came up fine. I am not getting an Err99 on the screen maybe I explained it wrong I am just getting BUSY which when I went to google to see what it meant someone in the evaluation mentioned Err 99 so I put that on the UHH topic also. Right now the camera is operating normally but if I have problems in the future I will contact Metro Camera in CO.
Thanks for the information

Great. Glad it's working fine now. The "Busy" message Can be another one of those general error messages caused by any one of several malfunctions. If it pesists, it'll need repair

Why would you keep 8000 pics on your card? Try filling up a hard drive to the point of only have a little space left and see what happens to read/write speed. A hard drive would scream "busy" under that situation too but they don't have a "busy" message.

Put the 8000 pics on your PC hard drive, back them all up onto something like an external drive or an online service, and delete them from the card to open all the storage space back up. Maybe even deep reformat the card in your camera to clear off all the hidden data.

Besides that, what pitiful camera resolution are you using to get 8000 pics on a single card?

You may want to read the other posts - he's not keeping all those photos on the card. He has processed ~ 8,000 photos using this card but they have been removed on a regular basis.
