An interview with KTJohnson,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been into it for over 50 years, starting with a Kodak Brownie Starmite. In the 60s I got a photography merit badge in Boy Scouts, then in the 70s with my 1st good camera, a Minolta SRT-101 I purchased from the U. S. Navy Exchange in Germany.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took one photography class at a community college in the 80s, then got a certificate from the New York Institute of Photography. I do & have done all kinds of photo work but now mostly travel & landscapes.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
There are so many different things that make a good photo but I think "composition" is the most important. Fifty different people could take a photo of the same thing all being "technically good", but only a very few would move around to stand in the right spot for the best composition.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
This photo was taken with a Minolta XE-7 & a 50mm, 1.7 Rokkor lens, handheld. I got a "European Out" from the Navy in Scotland & went to Norway to visit a distant cousin just outside of Oslo. After a few clear sunny days in mid November, it started to snow. We woke up to about six inches of heavy wet snow so I had to go out for a walk. A mile or so away was this beautiful scene.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Yes, in LR 5.7. I had already scanned the slide for this one to digital, doing my best to get all the dust off the transparency first. In LR I usually crop & straighten first, then if the photo was from a slide, like in this case, I use the spot removal tool to get rid of any remaining dust spots. Then I usually add a bit of clarity, play with the vibrance (but not much), maybe add a little bit in the shadows (depending), and then back off on the highlights if the histogram shows any clipping. If needed, add a touch of contrast & then sharpen to taste. That's it, unless I've used a wide angle and the bldgs. are tilted - then I use the vertical lens correction towards the beginning of this process.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Well, all of the old masters, the Time/Life Photography series of books & I'd like to mention David Muench (terriffic color landscape work). I used to get his calendars but now I hardly ever hear him mentioned.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I wouldn't change anything, but I sure would like to go to Norway again with a dslr.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How bad Ektachrome was compared with Kodachrome.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My handstrap. When I'm in the Photographer mode, that camera is an extension of my arm (no neck or shoulder strap).

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love the 16-50, 2.8 lens I got with my Sony A77, very versatile & big (so is the camera). People notice it & tend to get out of my way. I've never heard that mentioned before, but I like it.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None. But I like a long-brimmed ballcap to shade the viewfinder.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Carpentry, build things.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I almost gave it up completely on my honeymoon. We took a Greek Island cruise with a Eur-rail Pass. I was spending too much time taking pictures, not paying enough attention to my wife. I came very close to throwing my camera in the Mediterranean. Then, I came to my senses.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
So far, it's only posted here. I've got a domain name but no host yet.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Shoot, review what you've done, think about how you can improve it. Read this site. Pay more attention to the thought process of taking the picture than your gear (but know how to use your gear to it's max). And thanks to everyone who contributes.
