I have seen a site called http://www.greentoe.com and they claim that you can purchase equipment by the process of naming a price you are willing to pay and they search for a supplier that is willing to sell for that price. I have not tried to buy anything from them, but I am curious if any of you are familiar with them or purchased anything from them. I can't imagine that I could get a top rate lens for a dirt low price. I am always leery of offers that seem too good to be true. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thank you.

Wouldn't advise this approach unless you're looking for a point and shoot to take on vacation..... 8-) Camera gear, for a photographer, is waay too important to purchase in such a manner... IMHO.

I have used them. I saved about $50 on a lens.
Greentoe sends your offer to their list of sellers, if a seller accepts your price, you are notified and the lens is sent, in my case I received it from a NYC seller in two days. The warranty is good and there are no grey sales. I found the site very good and will definitely use them again. When you send them an offer, you must use a credit card, if they can find a seller who is willing to sell the item to you for the price you quote, the sale is done. All vendors, I think, will accept returns, you must pay return shipping. You should be sure that you want the item when you make an offer. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply I am sure that what you say you're willing to pay has to be close to the list price to be considered by their suppliers.

That's right. If you select an item and make an offer, which you reverse, you will see a sort of gauge that turns yellow and green depending on how much you offer. My dealer ended up being located in NJ and was a very reputable dealer, but as I said make sure you really want what you are ordering or you will pay the return shipping, but you will get a refund.

I could be wrong, but I believe when I checked out Greentoe, you don't know who you're buying from until the deal is completed. Take your chances.

You are correct. Greentoe guarantees that the item is new and sold by an authorized dealer, but you do take your changes. You can always return the item, after you pay for shipping. I wouldn't use it for everything.

Most photo dealers don't have a lot of flexibility in what they can sell something for. So your "bid" price will have to be near the MSRP. I personally would rather pay $50 more in order to choose a reputable dealer with a known excellent reputation. On the other hand, maybe this is one way for a new business to get some traction in the marketplace. So I might try it, but not on a major purchase.

I Think in the case of expensive quality camera gear, it is better to be safe than sorry! ;-) Mike J.

BS. I have purchased a 6D, a Sigma 105 2.8 macro, and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 art from Greentoe. All came in OEM boxes, not grey items and from authorized dealers. I saved $100.00 on the body and 75.00 on the 50.

What? With climate change and rises in sea level ? Are you serious ?

How about in Montana? I hear there is a decent camera store there somewhere.

Hmmm, there are two type of responses in this thread:

Intelligent responses by people who've used the service and liked it.

Responses from people who haven't used greentoe (probably haven't even heard about it!) and offer their opinion (not based in reality or fact) anyway.

When I read the OP, I didn't think I was going to respond, but I was curious about greentoe and read on. I learned something!

But my opinion isn't about greentoe, it's about responses not based on experience.

Only two? There are the two you identified, but I thought there were some that didn't fit either category...

You're placing yourself into the second (not intelligent) group.
