I have the wd tb3, I called them today and they told me me that
the black drives are internal. If you want an external drive you go with the My Cloud etc. Is this wrong or did the person not understand me!

A passive enclosure is fine for a SSD. They do not generate heat like spinning drives.

what Gene was describing was to buy an internal HDD and an external enclosure, installing the HDD in the enclosure... thereby making the internal drive an external HDD....

I think the person didn't understand you. I have an all black Western Digital "My Book" drive I had for 9 years and it's in operation everyday, plugged into my computer. I do have it backed up on two other external drives I store in different places.

I would suggest everybody find out what back up hard drives the IRS uses.

Then make SURE you never buy those. :hunf:

Hello fellow Hoggers and Hoggets. I need your help and expert advice. Time to clean up my computer. I have a mac and need to transfer my Lightroom catalog to one convenient place. Which portable hard drive do I get and how big? If necessary I'll buy 2 so I can have backup. I shoot RAW with a D800 Nikon, so the files are large. Thanks

The best deals on a name brand I've seen lately are Seagate. I bought a 3TB for $119 a year ago and I think you can get 4TB for about the same price today. I've been backing up thousands of files for a year now and haven't used 1TB yet.

After my WD, a Seagate, and 2 LaCie failed, I decided to buy a G-Tecehnology hard drive. Maybe i got the wrong ones. My next step is to follow Gene's advice: built one. Thank you everybody for all the information.

I've only ever had two hard drives fail and they were both WD. Seagate is treating me right so far. They're all Chinese crap anymore so I suppose buying any brand is a crap shoot. So you double backup onto two and hope for the best!
