Canon 400 upgrade

Thinking of upgrading from the older version Canon 100-400 L-IS lens to either the newer version of this lens (II) or the new fixed 400 f4.0 DO. I have a 2X III extender that does not auto focus with the older 100-400, and am concerned about the speed with the 2XIII attached, but also am curious whether the new version will autofocus with the 2X attached.I assume the 2XIII will autofocus with the new 400MM fixed (corret?), and I like the differential in speed vs. the zoom. Price is of coarse significantly different for the fixed lens, however the reviews for the 100 - 400 are pretty good. Anyone with experience with the new zoom lens? Comments would be appreciated.

Your 2x extender will decrease your maximum aperture by 2 stops, a 1.4x extender will decrease maximum aperture by 1 stop. Canon's AF systems work with lenses of maximum aperture of f5.6 or faster. Using a f4 maximum aperture lens would allow you to AF with a 1.4x extender but not with the 2x. Hope this helps

meaning with the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM, af would not work but the 1.4 x would, correct?

Correct. Will with 1.4x, won't with 2x

For one thing, the lens has nothing to do with autofocusing with the old, or the newer version, it's just about its largest aperture and the camera you're using. If you have a camera that has AF points capable of focusing down to f/8, than the slowest lens you can use is f/4, if using a 2x TC, no matter what lens! Using a 1.x TC will give you an extra stop, but if two lenses of the same kind (new or old) have the same apertures, it does not matter, only if your cameras AF can handle it matters!

Nalu, welcome to the Hog.
The 400DO will focus with a 2x but only if you are using the 7ll, 5lll or 1Dx. Otherwise it will only focus with the 1.4x. ;-)

That entirely depends on which Canon camera you shoot with, some models do not AF with an f/4 lens and an 2x TC, and some do, so that's the only thing that matters in that regard.

I shoot a 6D as well, the AF requires f5.6 or faster

Wasn't aware any Canon focused below 5.6 max. I've learned something new too. Now I'm starting to have GAS

Yep, that's one of the things I love about my new 7DM2 - it will AF (center point only) at f8!
