When the Mississippi River freezes, the only open water is immediately below the dams. Eagles congregate from miles up and down the river to fish in these open spaces. Last Friday, my wife and I went to Lock and Dam 18 to watch the eagles. The Corps of Engineers built an observation platform beside the lock for people to watch the operation of the Lock and Dam. In the winter the platform is used by eagle watchers. There were photographers on the platform from as far as Ohio and Kansas. I think my 70-300mm was the shortest lens there.

To shoot these aerial acrobats I put my 60D in full auto mode and shot 700 photos in a little over an hour. Most of them were in focus and even exposed reasonable well. Love my Canon.

This photo made me think that Carrier Pilots get evaluated by their fellow pilots. How would you like to have your piloting skills critiqued by this bunch of pilots on the flight line.

Nice! I wish they would build a deck like that at lock and dam 22. We have to try to shoot through a chain link fence, or wait for an occasional fly over, or go to the end and sit on some rocks. The ice below the dam is gone here, so the eagles have scattered.

Oh yes, here is a classic pose for an Eagle.
