EX means it's in the pro line of lenses. DC means that it's for a DSLR with an APS-C sensor. HSM stands for high speed motor. It refers to the lens' focus motor.
Thanks for the info. It was great but still did not answer my questions.
I even saved the info you sent for late reference.

Thanks again. Still confused as to the equivalence with DX and FX tough. Do the three manufacturers not make DX lenses or are they referred tp by other terms.

Anything that says CROP SENSOR or APS-C is for a DX.....
Full Frame is for an FX.
They all make both DX & FX - but they do not necessarily use those terms.... best to look on their web sites, lots of company specific terms on all of them.

Sigma-Nikon-Canon-Tamron
DC = DX = EFS = Di II = APSC
DG = FX = EF = Di = Full frame
All full frame lenses will fit on APSC cameras.
Nikon full frame cameras will take APSC lenses and use a reduced portion of the sensor.
Canon full frame cameras will generally not take APSC lenses and you will break things if you try to.
For the rest of your question, give google a try, there is a wealth of information out there.

   FX and DX are Nikon terms. Other brands use other terms as lighthouse as shown.

Another point - I do not think I have seen Nikon ever use the term FX in their lens designations, but they do use it to describe the full frame format.
So, their DX lenses will have DX in the lens designation, and if DX is not there, it is an FX lens.
Everyone/anyone, please feel free to correct me if this is not right.
Canon - IS - Image Stabilisation
Nikon - VR - Vibration Reduction
Sigma - OS - Optical Stabilisation
Tamron - VC - Vibration Compensation
