Hi I have bought a full frame camera and wish to get an additional lens that is sharp in detail 17-50 or there about at a reasonable cost would need to have a decent wide to under 50 mm would be OK ,One of nikon's walk around lenses is 1700.00 , too costly for my bank account!. I have Nikon 50mm 1.8 and Nikon 85mm 1.8 and the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 all for FX . I have a crop camera with a Sigma 17-50 2.8 which is Fab. but DC lens not FX Thanks for any input you can offer! CJ.

The Tamron SP 20-40 f2.7-3.5 aspherical is a great lens ! About $250-300 most places - I would get it from KEH if they have one. You will need a screw drive to use this lens and focus may be slightly slower than you may be used to.

Hey CJ - you and I are not dis-similar in terms of Nikon kit. I have a D700 and the 85 f1.8, the 50 f1.4 and used to have Sigma 70-200. Like you I wanted something with a wider, but not too wide angle. Having the primes, I really didn't see the point in a zoom, so went for the Nikkor AF-S 28mm f1.8 - terrific lens and just right "for me" ! I'm seriously thinking about selling the 50mm lens. I'm happy to do the "walk a few steps forward or back" and think I can manage without the 50. It's just the way I take pics, and I really don't want any "redundant" or "under-used" lenses.

Here's a few examples of the 28 on my D700 ......

D700 with AF-S 28mm f1.8G
D700 with AF-S 28mm f1.8G...

Yes, focus motor in camera. I am not a Nikon expert so am unsure exactly which models have and which ones don't have the focus motor.

Another "forgotten" lens is the Tamron SP 28-105 F2.8 LD IF Asphereical - for about $350 used @ KEH.

It's good to be able to contribute to your thread CJ. There is also an AF-S 20mm f1.8G (released Sept 2014) and talk/rumour of a 24mm coming soon to round off the f1.8 series of primes ....... that is unless they are also going to do a 135mm !! All great quality lenses without going to the really high priced f1.4 versions !

If you go this route just choose your focal lengths carefully. It's very easy to buy 2 which really are too close together in focal length when it comes to actual usage. Cheers from the UK !

The D700, D610 and 750 all have focus motors in the body so you can use "screw drive" lenses on those bodies. If you are looking for a very good wide angle zoom lens, consider the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D. It was Nikon's premier WA zoom and is nearly as good as the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G. It can be had on Ebay for $750-$950. An outstanding lens.

I have a Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens I would be willing to sell. It is in like new condition and is a USA model, purchased as refurbished by Nikon USA. It works perfectly. If interested, PM me.

CJ - to help you make certain, this is the 28mm lens I have suggested to you ....... info straight from the horse's mouth, so-to-say, from Nikon UK...
