Smoke images first try

Having seen a friend, who attends a photography class, post some of his smoke images on FB I decided to try this for myself.

I have learned so much in my first session and expect my next series to be better.

I have a better understanding of where I need to place my flash and torch so as not to let the light spill onto the background and have also bought a larger piece of black card to give me more room around the smoke.

I hope you like them but feel free to criticise anything you see as wrong or could be improved :)

I like them, but find the smoke dispenser distracting.

I see a horse's head in the red one. Nice photos.

Thankyou for your comment Violameister, the whether to leave the smoke dispenser in the shot or not seems to be split after looking through Flickr. I personally don't mind seeing it but wouldn't miss it either :D

I lit the smoke from the left using an led torch, which is pretty bright, aiming slight away from the background so as not to illuminate it and my flash was positioned parallel to the smoke on the right side. I attached 2 pieces of card to the sides of the flash with an elastic band to stop light illuminating the background and also to stop flare in the lens. My flash power was 1/16th as it was less than 12 inches away from the smoke. Camera settings were manual focus, ISO 100, 1/200th shutter speed and F/11

I hope that helps :)

Thank you, glad you liked them.

It's only when you freeze the smoke with a flash that you can make out shapes, I am now off to really look at my other images for more possible animals ;)
