Yet Another Ebay Problem

Recently, I posted about getting scammed by an Ebay seller; much because I was too trusting on the particular auction details.

Now I have an entirely different problem that Ebay appears to not have a clue as to how to solve it.

I won an auction for a new 3tb hard drive. Upon arrival, it did not work. I even had the seller offer some actions to try to get my pc to recognize the drive. Finally, the seller offered a refund when the item is returned. Ebay steps in and issues a pre-paid shipping label for the return. Also, when the HD is returned I would get reimbursed for both the cost of the item and the original shipping cost. All is well up to that point. The return shipping label was 2-day Priority. I mailed it on 5 Jan; the postal service tracking info has yet to be updated since 10:01 p.m. on that date. It's obvious the package has either been lost or trashed beyond delivery. I went to the post office where I mailed it and asked for help. All they did was look at the tracking info and arrived at the same conclusion as I. Their solution was to file a claim. Now here's the problem with that: one, I'm not the purchaser of the return label; two, Ebay added no extra insurance. The item value is a bit over $100.00; postal service covers up to $50.00. Were I to successfully get a postal service claim, I would get less than 50 cents on the dollar (refund was to be $111.00). And I don't know if I'm eligible to make a claim on an item that I did not pay the postage on.
I was never able to find an Ebay phone #, but a friend of mine who is a frequent seller had one. When I called, I was transferred twice to "another dept" while having to tell the story 3 times. I ended up in their "Escalation Dept" where I was informed I would have to wait another two days and then call back. The two days allegedly had something to do with giving the postal service 10 days before taking any action. So, two days later I went through the same 3 departments and 3 explanations only to be told to call back in 5 days.
I have spent considerable time navigating all of Ebays customer support pages to no avail. Their help formats are so narrowly structured as to have no flexibility. So, as of now, my refund is held hostage by the postal service while Ebay continues to obfuscate. I would think the proper procedure would be for Ebay to refund my purchase and they deal with the postal service. But what do I know?

I have been an Ebay buyer for more than ten years with just under 800 positive feedbacks and NO negatives. It's a great place to find stuff you can't find anywhere else. But let something go wrong and it's a different ball game. How I managed to get this far without problems is beyond me.

Sorry for the long tirade, but wanted to know if any hoggers here have had such a problem.

Cannot help with your problem, but you would have been better off purchasing a new hard drive from Micro Center.
WD Red 3TB Intellipower SATA III 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive...$109.99.
A hard drive is a mechanical devise subject to break down and you have no idea hour many hours the eBay user has on it. Looks like too much hassle and not worth the money or the time.
Good luck.

The drive was new in original packaging.

Wow - it hasn't been a good year for you so far!

USPS "tracking" is a fraud. They do not scan items along the way except randomly - I shipped a package six months ago, and according to their "tracking" it is STILL in a facility in New Jersey. Not like UPS or FEDEX where you know when it left each facility along the way. Your only recourse with USPS is to insure each package for far more than it is worth. But if it has personal value, go with UPS. As far as your predicament - wow - good luck.

I too have, within the past year, encountered issues with Ebay I have never before dealt with. I purchased a $1,500 ring for my wife from a commercial site selling on Ebay.

When it came, it was bent, not sized as requested, and the center stone was not set properly. Given that the seller appeared to not take any care in checking the ring prior to shipping, I returned the ring and requested a fund. The good news is that I received a refund less shipping and handling both ways. The seller did offer to correct or replace the ring. In my mind, I was already not pleased with their initial service so I chose to not continue doing business with them. My choice!

In trying to offer a complaint on the seller to Ebay, this is what I learned. As long as the seller offers to correct the situation and/or refunds the purchase price, I was unable to enter a complaint. Thus, shoddy service does not get noted by Ebay if a big seller is involved. They have a revenue stream to protect so I have learned that even 98% satisfaction linked with a big time seller is not always true.

Thus, and we see this over and over on the Hog- aside from Ebay: particularly for more expensive items, buy from B & H, Adorama, . . or a dealer you can trust. In my case, I got a great deal from a shoddy seller. At 68 I have finally learned my lesson. I am hoping to fix stupid, at least as relates to buying things.

I trust Amazon a lot more than Ebay. Amazon has a much better customer satisfaction policy.

Billbobboy42,
If this is an indicator as to how your year will progress, I suggest you go into hibernation or stasis for this entire anum.

BTW since USPS is swamped with mail and packages during this time of year, it is quite possible that your shipment has been lost. It's up to you to cover your shipment insurance for loss or damage. Here, we don't have mail delivery like you do and typically need to use DHL or UPS or FEDEX and then pick up items at their depot so they can tack on a duty fee.

This is exactly why I never trust Ebay and do no business with them.

You're trying to get stuff on the cheap from strangers and getting burned, then whining about the results.

No sympathy here.

If it were the choice, I would still pay the extra price at a responsible retailer. I wonder why the person would sell a new drive on eBay. If he paid the original price, then he would have lost money through the transaction of eBay and PayPal. Makes no sense to me. Since the electronic world changes by the day, I still trust a valuable retailer. At least you have the warranty and something to fall back on. I am in the process of purchasing all my computer parts from Micro Center. Never had a problem with issues. Just my rant.
Good luck.

Anytime you ship something do not use the post office UPS or FedEx

Most people sellers and buyers are honest the problem you have is the post office.

Many sellers on eBay are retailers just pushing the product out the back door
