I understand 6d is full frame and some of my lenses will work. I mainly shot landscape, some wildlife, but starting to like night photography. The question is, am I really going to se a differen in image quality?

You will see a slightly better image quality but mostly, the 6D is by far better for night photography in the fact that you will be able to use higher ISO and longer shutter duration with less noise.

The 6D will not be as good for wildlife as your lenses will seem shorter and you will not be able to shoot as many frames per second. I recently replaced my 60D with a 6D and am very happy, the high ISO shooting is amazing and honestly the 24-105 lens that replaced my 15-85 is in a wholly different league, if you shoot with a 10-22 you will miss it as the alternatives for full frame will be a bit lacking.

I went from a 70D to a 6D and have absolutely no complaints, except that it is marginal for action shots. The 70D's biggest advantage is its focus system. If you are shooting video or action shots, such as BIF, then the 70D is superior. You can shoot these things with the 6D, but it is more difficult to do it well. For low light/high ISO the 6D is clearly superior. I have gotten some very good results at ISO 25,600. Overall image quality and color rendition does seem to be somewhat better with the 6D, but I can't say that it is a large difference. For landscapes, portraits, typical "tourist" shots, the 6D is hard to beat. For action, the 70D is a good camera for the money. Any way you look at it, both are good cameras. The 7DII is a bit more money then the 6D, but it overcomes many of the 70D's short comings as far as low light/high ISO shooting. For shooting action there are few that can beat it. I will probably be ordering one soon to complement my 6D.

Just trying to decide, if I really want to spend the money. Do you know when the next canon to take its place is coming out?

Both the 70D and 6D are relatively new. Despite some rumors about a 6DII coming out this year, I doubt that it will. Canon doesn't normally replace its current models that quickly. There are much more credible rumors about a 5DIII replacement being announced soon. Prices of the 5DIII should become much more agreeable if that happens and that could be the answer you are looking for, if your budget will support it. The 5DIII has speed, focus, plus all the benefits of full frame. I am looking at the 7DII to supplement my 6D, but at the same time I am waiting to see what Canon announces in the next couple of months. Before I buy the 7DII and end up with 2 cameras I think I would rather see if there will be just one that will do all I want. The 5DIII would, but I want to see what else comes out of the pipeline in the near future. Don't forget, if you go full frame you have to factor in the cost of replacing any EF-S lenses you may have. If you decide on a 6D or 5DIII be sure to check out refurbished bodies at Canon.com or such retailers as B&H, Adorama, & KEH.

Do you have a 70D now, or are you comparing the 70D and 6D as alternatives to something else that you already have?

What lenses do you have? You just say some will work, I think.

I'm making the assumption that any EF-S lenses may be a problem, at least from possible vignetting, if not other issues such as mirror interference if they mount at all....

Finally, there is a new Rebel supposed to be coming in the next couple of months which could be a significant upgrade in the Rebel lineup, but that may not be relevant.

"Some" ? Which ones? If you have any EF-S lenses in your collection, NONE of them will fit the 6D.

For your stated needs, the 6D is the better camera. What you need to decide is, how much value does your current LENS collection add, if any, to a 6D. If all of your lenses are currently EF-S lenses for the small sensor cameras, then you might be better served, value wise, by going with the 70D.

I had a 70D which I sold after I got my 6D. As far as my lenses, I have 6 L's. From a 16-35 to my latest, a 100-400 L II. They will work on any Canon full frame or crop sensor made since '87 or '89. Whichever. Canon EF-S lenses will not work on any Canon full frame. The mount is the same but construction of the rear lens element prevents proper mounting. There may be some that will actually mount, but then mirror damage becomes the issue. As far as the possible new Rebel, that is unlikely to be a step up from the 70D. In Canon's lineup the Rebels are considered entry level. The xxD series, such as the 60D, 70D, etc are intermediate and the xD, such as the 1Dx, 6D and 5D series are semi-pro and pro models.

That's a good price for a 6D, provided it comes with a USA warranty

You should be in good shape to go FF then. Doesn't sound like you have an EF-S lens in the bunch. Good planning!
