I'm curious who's planning on going to the big 75th rally in August. I am seriously considering going just to take pictures and watch people. A street photographers dream! I would love to hone my skills there.

Who's up for it?

You will get some great photo's there, of not only the bikers, but the scenery as well. You will find most bikers are accommodating to pictures, but I would stay clear of the activities at night. Just saying.................

I think I will sit on the hill of the lawn of the jail and take a few from that perspective. Maybe some night photos from downtown...I can't wait, Lol!

Hello from lovely Sturgis! I actually live on the busiest street...yes, thousands of bikes cruise by daily! We've rented our house and we are leaving town during the 75th. I'm most definitely NOT a rally fan, but concur that you can do great street work here. You do see everything, unfortunately!

How time flies. We made the 50th , was a sea of bikers. Still have an Ultra, but at 88 , and wife of 67 years in nursing home, I won't make the 75th. Maybe the 100th!! Post pictures, please.

Here are three shots of Main Street, Sturgis taken at the 50th
(in August 1990) with an old 35 mm Olypmus p&s camera and then scanned. There were an estimated 350,000 +/- folks there.
I rode my 1990 FXLR from San Diego and put on over 4,000 miles total for the trip. Too much fun. Many other photos taken but not for posting on a family website like UHH.

If you are there to take pictures, visit Custer State Park to the south of Rapid City. Excellent opportunities with pronghorn, prairie dogs, bison, deer, turkey, and grouse. Early and late are best. Nap in the afternoon.

Nope. Sold my last hog in 12/2004. After 10 years on that one, and 50,000 miles.
Then bought a Party Barge pontoon boat. I call it my 14 passenger Harley.
We rode there in '97.
Had a lot of fun, and enjoyed a leisurely ride back.
The Bro's and I had a saying for people who trailer in, then act like bikers: Trailer Queens.
Guys like us had little respect for the Trailer Queens.
If you ride, you ride. ;)

Be respectful of who you photograph. Some folks do NOT take kindly to anybody taking their picture for any reason.

I lived a few years and worked television news in the Black Hills. So I was at the rally every year, day after day, doing news stories about this and that.

If you're going I'm sure you're well aware about street photography at the rally - be very careful. There are people there who would just as soon not be in any photos.

We had an experience once where we went into a park on a particular afternoon. A very large, scruffy, dirty fellow approached right away. He was soft spoken and kind but told us we should probably go no further with our camera.
We took his word for it.

Yes the place is wonderful for pictures. Any direction you look there's another picture waiting to be taken but just be careful.

Best of luck

Jimmya what RV station did you work for?

Yes, there is lots to see and do in the Black Hills. A beautiful ride is through Spearfish Canyon and while there stop and see Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls. You'll see Bridalveil Falls along the road.

I love the RV and going south in the winter, but boy, do I miss home! Kids want us to settle down in Montana, but I can't get my head around leaving South Dakota!

Was there last year and it was hectic, but nothing like the 60th was. I have no intentions of going for the 75th. It is bad enough on a bike, but in a car would be insane.

There are great photo opportunities, and people watching/photographing in the crowd will be a lot of fun.

There is still the controversy about whether you ride or haul your bike to Sturgis. There is even places that rent bikes for the rally. But not everyone has the time or body to ride. We see some pretty fancy big rigs for hauling bikes. As frustrating as it can be with traffic and blocked roads, I do enjoy looking at all the different types of bikes.

This was in Hill City, but not during the rally. Interesting photos on this trailer.

I've rode through Custer State Park a couple years ago, some of the best riding I've had. I love the hills of Spearfish canyon, a lot different than Minnesota that's for sure. I will be staying a few blocks behind the Jail, a prime location. I plan to drive my SUV and I'm sure car traffic will be a royal pain, but I'm familiar with the area, I think that will help.

Most bikers aren't as scarey as most people think. Sometimes the most interesting photo subjects are the ones you do need to steer clear of.

Actually I worked for two in Rapid City... KEVN and KOTA.
KOTA was by far the better job for me but I enjoyed my time there. I was stationed at Ellsworth when it was a SAC base and was an Air Force broadcaster and was able to transition into civilian broadcasting and worked it for about
20-years total, it was a good time.

Wish I could go. I've got an 03 Ultra. Made it to the Harley 100th anniversary party in Milwaukee- great fun. Visited Sturgis on a road trip in July 2 years ago to see what it looked like without the bikes. One horse town. Hard to believe how it transforms during the rally. Loved the Black Hills. Strongly recommend visiting Little Bighorn National Monument if you like history.
