An interview from Nosaj,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Film photography for 30 years; Digital photography since 2001
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training; but have attended workshops and instructional session at my camera club, observed others, and consulted a few very good books.
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Impactful composition (assuming it has good lighting, resolution, focus, and DoF).
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Pentax K3, Sigma 17-70mm lens, Benro tripod set up on an open field, manual mode, lens hood (no filter).
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I neither own nor use post processing software such as Photoshop, Elements, or Lightroom. To do simple perimeter cropping, light/dark, and alignment, I use Microsoft Photo Gallery (a free download for MS Windows).
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I took the shot while on a photo field trip to northern Vermont during the foliage season through my camera club (Stony Brook camera Club of Wrentham, MA). There are many members whose photography are truly inspiring.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would change nothing for this shot, but I would try to get additional shots of this scene from different perspectives.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to better handle aperture.
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Pentax 18-135mm (WR) - produces excellent results for its full range; light weight, no lens creep, excellent auto focus; superb performance on the K3 body.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
A Bolt TTL hot shoe flash.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I also play in a local jazz band in the Boston, MA, area.
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
For those who travel from airports: be careful of TSA agents at security check-in who don't know what telephoto lenses are and want the passenger to open them up to check inside in a manner similar to opening a laptop.
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
On UHH (under "JayDog" and "Nosaj." Also, at
http://jdtimages.wordpress.com15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep submitting. I see some many really excellent images that could and should received high ratings.
Thank you.
