An interview from Nosaj,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Film photography for 30 years; Digital photography since 2001

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training; but have attended workshops and instructional session at my camera club, observed others, and consulted a few very good books.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Impactful composition (assuming it has good lighting, resolution, focus, and DoF).

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Pentax K3, Sigma 17-70mm lens, Benro tripod set up on an open field, manual mode, lens hood (no filter).

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I neither own nor use post processing software such as Photoshop, Elements, or Lightroom. To do simple perimeter cropping, light/dark, and alignment, I use Microsoft Photo Gallery (a free download for MS Windows).

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I took the shot while on a photo field trip to northern Vermont during the foliage season through my camera club (Stony Brook camera Club of Wrentham, MA). There are many members whose photography are truly inspiring.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would change nothing for this shot, but I would try to get additional shots of this scene from different perspectives.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to better handle aperture.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Pentax 18-135mm (WR) - produces excellent results for its full range; light weight, no lens creep, excellent auto focus; superb performance on the K3 body.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
A Bolt TTL hot shoe flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I also play in a local jazz band in the Boston, MA, area.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
For those who travel from airports: be careful of TSA agents at security check-in who don't know what telephoto lenses are and want the passenger to open them up to check inside in a manner similar to opening a laptop.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
On UHH (under "JayDog" and "Nosaj." Also, at http://jdtimages.wordpress.com

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep submitting. I see some many really excellent images that could and should received high ratings.
Thank you.

An interview with Preachdude,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
In 1953, my parents bought me a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera with flash. It used 126 film. It was purchased in Yosemite, and I have been photographing the park nearly every year.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took some courses at a community college; 90% of my images are of landscapes.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A good picture is more than a snapshot of a place and time. It interprets the scene, the conditions, and, sometimes, the photographer’s mood.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Nikon D800E with Zeiss 24mm f/1.4 on a tripod; five images at f/8 for -2,-1,0,+1,+2 using 2 seconds shutter delay; Photomatix Pro; Noiseware; Photoshop Essentials

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Workflow varies with each image. My primary tools are Photoshop Essentials, Noiseware, and Photomatix Pro.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Ansel Adams has been a great influence. I have photographed that scene at all times of the day during all times of the year.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Each time I go back to a location I’ve photographed previously, I look for ways to adjust the perspective or interpret the scene differently.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had learned to discard more images that don’t satisfy me and learn from doing so.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I almost always carry a circular polarizer.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Of the lenses I’ve used, I loved the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 for its sharpness, lack of distortion, and contrast. I look forward to renting to try the Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 and the 35mm as well.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I usually carry a cheap shoe-mount flash for fill light if necessary, and I’m beginning to carry an HID spotlight for light painting during long exposures at night.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I’m a retired pastor, and now work as a musician and writer.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
In high school I learned how to make emulsions using gum Arabic, potassium chloride, and tempra. I used Tri-x film then, but in these digital times, I would proceed differently.
1. Make 3 identical high high contrast images using blue, red, and yellow filters.
2. Make three emulsions for each of the three colors.
3. Spread one emulsion on a large flat surface, project the image for that on the emulsion, and develop with water.
4. When the emulsion is dry, repeat for the other two colors. With practice, the results can be fun!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a Facebook Page

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Always be respectful of your environment, whether natural or man-made.
