Can anyone help me decide on which wide angle lens I should purchase for my new Nikon D810? I have my eye on the new Nikon 20mm f/1.8 or the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 or should I wait for the new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 to come out. I really would like to stay under $1400. Please help!

I have been playing with the 20 MM f1.8 and can tell you it's pretty awesome - i'm renting this one but I'm seriously considering buying it even though I have the 14-24 f2.8.

You might do you well to try renting these lenses for a week or so to get a sense of which you prefer.

Bob, where can you rent lenses? Are the rentals only for the newer cameras? Thanks.

I have used borrowlens.com for years- see their offerings and rates on their website. They have a wide array of gear, from basic to pretty exotic stuff

I have been using the new 20mm 1.8 on my Df for several months with very good success. I just posted a shot of a church in the Photo gallery ( Church of the leaning tree) using that lens. So far I'm very impressed with sharpness, contrast, and low distortion! I seem to use it all the time which surprises me. It is a very good landscape lens!

The 20mm F1.8 is a nice lens, and sharper across the field than the 16-35. but the 16-35 is more versatile. None hold a candle to the 14-24 F2.8, which is considered one of Nikon's best lenses. New it's $2000, but used the going rate is $1400 to $1600. I am selling one of mine for $1400 if you are interested. With box, case, lens caps etc. Send me a PM if you would like to consider it.

I use an old f2.8 20mm 'D'. I love it, I would sell my grandmother into slavery for the new 1.8!

I have used Lens Depot in Florida several times with no problems. Their web site shows what all they have.

Take a look at the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 at $369.

Its manual focus but the DOF is so great focusing is unnecessary.

Check it out on DXOMARK; they rate it very high and extremely sharp. Its a sleeper lens.

I like mine very much.

Only issue with the Samyang is that it has pretty awful complex distortion and it has high CA. But if you use a good lens profile, like the one in DXO Optics Pro, it does produce results that rival the 14-24.

On your budget, your best choice in an ultrawide zoom is the Nikkor 16-35mm f/4. If you need a faster choice, the 17-35mm f/2.8 is almost as good. The best super wide angle primes are made by Zeiss, but the 21mm f/2.8 and the 15mm f/2.8 are not in your budget. For a prime, the Nikkor 20mm f/1.8 is excellent.

Samyang has released the 14 2.8 lens in Sony FE mount and I think I want one. A lot of the reviews I have read say that quality control is not great for this lens, and you should do some serious testing before you decide to keep it. It also has some really weird distortions, mostly at the edges, but to a lesser degree in the center, of all places. Of course anything this short on a full frame sensor is going to have some serious perspective distortions...

My other choice is the Voigtlander 15 4.5, but that lens won't work at all on a DSLR. The only digital body that it really performs well with is the A7s, all the other mirrorless cameras, including Leica, show serious vignetting and really horrible color shifts. It was designed for rangefinder film cameras a long time ago...
