D810 RAW, DNG, PSD file sizes

Have new D810 and use CS5. Rather buy CC right away, downloaded the DNG converter for trial. Took handful of pics RAW 38-39KB. DNG files are 28-32KB. Created 1 PSD w/o any changes - 101KB. Did a little tweaking - 245KB. Also the image is 20.2 x 30.2".

Other than the RAW, are these file sizes normal? Am I losing anything by converting to DNG? Is the image size 20 x 30 the same if I were using CC?

Thanks!

You mean megabytes- MB, right?

The file sizes sound about right.
With the PSD files- could be anything- depends on what you did with them and subject content.

Sounds about right for file sizes, converting raw to DNG supposedly reduces size slightly.

What do you lose? In my opinion, nothing. I have converted my nefs to dng for quite awhile now. Never regretted the move.

DNG is still raw data. And I like not having the XMP sidecar files to deal with myself.

Pretty much. If I do any editing in PSD files I will see file sizes grow to 500 mb or larger from my D800. I shoot 14 bit lossless compressed raw files and they tend to be a little larger at the outset. For all intents and purposes, the dng file is the same as the raw file, minus any proprietary camera settings like Active D Lighting, in camera HDR, etc.

I am not sure why your dng files are smaller, other than you might be losing a jpg preview in the process.

Looks about right...In PS if your using layers, (as I do heavily) making a copy of the background layer alone (which IMO you should do) will double your file size. Copy that layer it'll triple in size and so on. You can always merge down your layers or Flatten the image when your done with PP, but you can't go back and re-edit once saved out...best to keep a copy of the edits as a PSD or a Tiff. Then save as and flatten a copy or just save as JPG.
