I can buy a Dell computer with windows seven. There are three different Dell models at the store. All have widows seven. Is that a good choice? Compared to Windows 8 or 8.1 or any thing else?

Windows 8 is crap. Windows 8.1 is not better.
Windows 7 is proven.
Windows 9 has been skipped.
Windows 10 is not out but promising for what I have read.

I am not sure if there is an upgrade path offered yet, you may want to check this as an option.

Hello my friend. I've been using computers and software every day since 1978. And I've got to admit Windows 7 professional 64 bit is the best I have ever experienced. I would highly recommend it, and I would recommend against getting Windows 8.

That's my recommendation, and I live by it.

If you have any questions about Windows 7, feel free to give me a shout. I don't know it all, by any means, however over the years I have acquired a lot of knowledge.

Why would you want to buy a brand new computer and run a 6 year old operating system on it?

Get 8.1. It's more efficient with system resources, and designed to take advantage of modern hardware. If you can't adjust to the new Start Screen install Classic Shell or Start 8 from Stardock and it's just like Windows 7.

Thanks wall bang her for your recommendation. I'm very happy with my Windows 7 64 bit. I certainly do not want to make any changes at this time.

I have been watching, and I'm waiting for a stronger endorsement for an updated Windows operating system. At this time though, I don't see anything of any special benefit to me by making a change.

Again I thank you. Have a great day.

You make some good points. I'd upgrade to Win8.1, but then I'd have to buy a new color calibration device.

Get whatever you want.
But I have a Windows 8.1 in front of me, and my laptop running Windows 7 to my right.
The laptop is reporting weather, Solar production, and handles email.
The windows 8.1 handles everything else.

Once you groom Windows 8.1 to your desired functions, and get away from the apple-esk app crap, it runs away from Win 7.
Much faster for all the things I need it to do.
Win 8.1 also handles my graphics needs beautifully.

PS: The Win 8.1 is a Dell tower, the Win 7 is a Toshiba.

Newer isn't better. Better is better. Your comment is based on limited experience. Win 8 is crap. Win 7 is proven, and IS better, regardless of being 7 years in the running. Win NT is 20 years running and works great.
This is based on MS experience spanning from 1985 to 2015. Others with more experience concur that 7 beats 8.

OK - you do have me beat in the running insecure and antiquated technology department.

Unfortunately (I guess?) I am charged with keeping my corporate IT infrastructure running and secure, and except where necessary because I have one line of business software vendor that still hasn't updated their software, I have everything on 8.1, Server 2012 R2, or OS X Mavericks.

Remarkably, the number of day to day support calls went down dramatically when we made the move to 8.1.

Naturally Aspirated internal combustion engines were proven too, but technology improves and marches on.

Thank you. It seems since I viewed the Win8.1 upgrade, a fix has emerged.
