I really kinda like this shot of my granddaughter and would like to make it into a nicer portrait type photo. I'm not really familiar with "the portrait rules" about how much to crop, how much of hands to show, take out background Christmas lights, fill in shoulder or crop out, etc. Wondering if any of you might show me what you would do with this. There is no pp applied to the photo yet. Thanks in advance for any attempts!

If it was just your grand daughter you wished to isolate ...

Cropped, straightened, minor retouch.

Wow. That came out really nice. They should be pleased with your changes.

I didn't crop quite as tight as Qbert. Reduced the saturation a bit, especially the red, and wiped out the background. Blurred a few blemishes, and toned down a few hot spots. Lovely young lady! Hope it looks OK on your monitor.

This one is a bit wider, and proportioned better for printing.
Its really difficult to remove objects and retain a realistic look.

I liked Qbert's first edit so much I used it as the base image, and just added a bit more retouching.

All of these look great! I don't have an edit to submit, but I thought it worth mentioning that at least one aspect that is close to home for me.

I noticed on some edits that the beauty marks have been removed. When I offered to do this to my daughter's image, she got a little upset because they are a part of who she is. Of course, who wouldn't want cuts or pimples removed but, beauty marks may be another issue to the individual in the photograph.

Just a thought
