The other morning I picked up my Canon 7D with a Tamron 16-300mm attached, and when I turned it on for a quick check, noticed the battery must have been dead, since I was getting no information in the top information window. I changed batteries, and still no joy. So, I went ahead and recharged the battery and tried again. No joy.
Thinking I might have a problem with that particular lens, I changed lens, and still had no indicator that anything was working. So, just to be complete, I popped out the CF card and reseated it. Aha! That worked. But as soon as I pressed the shutter half-way for a test shot, all the information disappeared again. I tried another CF card, but was having the same problem.
I went through the process of reseating the CF card, and finally my 7D turned on, and I could take pictures. So I went outside for what I hoped was going to a long day of shooting, but after 7 shots, the camera display went dead again.
Has anyone heard of this problem? Is there a local remedy I can try to fix it? And more to the point, if I send it back to an authorized Canon facility, is it something that can be repaired at all?
Bob
Have you googled the problem. I had a total electrical failure on my 7D but managed to get it repaired. I sent it away got it back in about a week. Not to Canon.

You might try to take an eraser on a pencil and try to clean the gold plated contacts on your CF card.

CF card contacts are pinholes. It would have to be a very small eraser! :-D

You don't happen to remember to whom you sent your 7D do you?
I have a prob like that, it says error 30 and suggests removing battery wait a few secs then reinsert, seems to work so far, buffer might overload or overheat

Hi Bob
Have look w/flashlight inside of the 7D where the CF card goes to make sure that no pins are bent or broken? Also you might want to try and reset the 7D in the bottom of camera battery compartment take both the main battery and coin battery out and wait for 60 seconds then reinsert both batteries. In your manual you can find these instructions.
I'm not having a problem with my 7D but would like to know what the problem is just in case this happens to me so I could be able to fix it myself....Rich

That would be a good place to start. After reinserting the batteries I would then do a system reset. Put everything back to the original settings.
The only other thing I can think of would be a bent pen where you insert the card. I have never heard of that happening guess it's possible. If the pins look okay and this doesn't work then it looks like you'll be sending it back to Canon and let them check it. I wouldn't trust anyone but I'm authorized repair center, in other words a Canon repair center.
I would ask them to go over the entire camera and give me an estimate. If it's too expensive then I would start looking for a good quality used camera.
A quick question, does your back LCD show the shooting information? When you turn the camera on Push the info button and see what happens. One more question, how many shutter activations are on this camera?

Take the coin battery out, which is located in the battery compartment with the main battery. My red CF light on the rear of my 7d would continually flash, which was fixed by removing the coin battery for 10 min.
Bob
I can look it up for you but I am in the UK.

I wish that it had been that easy Fullframe. I replaced the Date/Time battery this morning and it had no effect. The problem still exists. I'm not ready to give up on this camera, so I need to keep looking for a solution.

Hi Bob
Have you determine if any and all pins in the camera are ok and no bent ones and broken one as well if so I'm wondering if it's the power pcb gone bad or some other pcb going bad?
