Light and angles

Please indulge my ignorance once more. So I might learn for the future. What is a perfect score if mine is 7.20

An interview with LovePhotography330,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have loved taking photos for as long as I can remember. Back in film days, it was always so exciting to see your pictures when they came back from development. I've just never lost that desire to see what you can capture!

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No, I haven't had any formal training. I've taken a class given by a friend. I mostly enjoy wildlife and natural surroundings...animals, birds, the moon etc.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
When I see someone look at a photo and keep looking, I know something is there that captures their attention.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Normally I use a Nikon D600. Actually this photo of the baby robins was taken with an iPhone. I had to put a ladder in the Gator so I could get high enough to see the nest without disturbing them. There was not much room to maneuver a large camera.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Unfortunately I don't know how to use Photoshop. I do a little with iPhoto.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My love of nature is my inspiration and wanting to enjoy what I see for a long time.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Yes, I would have used a better camera.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
If I had known more about composition and the the importance of the subject, etc. I could have had a lot better photos in years past.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A tripod

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love the Nikon 28-300mm lens. It is what I use most of the time.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I don't have any lighting equipment.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I keep busy with many things...making soaps, lots of outside work in the spring until fall, starting lessons on a dulcimer, involved in a photography club, an art guild and many other things too numerous to mention.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I'll have to think about that one.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I don't have a website, but I am on facebook.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
"Take photos of what you envision in your mind and do so until you feel it when you see your photo"

An interview with Mobad58,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
A friend got me interested when we were in the ninth grade
and I am 58 now so it's been a long time.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took a home study course called "The School of Modern Photography" when I was a juvenile and after high school I joined the Navy and went to their photo school in Pensacola, FL. I'm a long haul trucker so I do scenics mostly these days but I have done studio photography as well as weddings for over 40 years.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A good subject against the proper background then technically
capturing it so as to convey your reason for shooting it...other than that, it's up to the beholder as to whether it's good or not.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
The fall background was shot with a Nikon D100 and Sigma 24-70/2.8 on an obviously overcast day. It just never seemed quite "complete" until I was delivering horse feed to a thoroughbred farm in Louisiana and was allowed to photograph the mare and little one(also overcast) but the background was too cluttered. Later I realized the two images were complements so I used Photoshop to combine them into hmmm...a good subject against a proper background(ditto). Horses shot with Nikon D40x w\18-55 kit lens.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
As per previous, I selected the horses in PS then copy and pasted onto fall BG then used transform to size the horses and added a hint of a shadow.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Ansel Adams has always been my favorite and as a youth I bulk loaded my Plus-X in 2-6 shot rolls so I could adjust the development for contrast without ruining a whole roll...just like Adams did with sheet film. Can't say that I ever achieved his level of quality(35mm will never come close to large format)but I did get to the point where #2 paper was all I needed. As for inspiration, we all take pics that in the end don't meet our expectations...but if we're fortunate, later an element that completes the pic comes along and thanks to PP we can accomplish the merger and make an otherwise un-interesting pic into a "photograph".

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
If I could redo anything, it would be to stay in professional photography and not to have wandered off into other things..

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had understood that except when shooting for hire(where the goal is to please the customer) that my craft is mostly for my own personal enjoyment and it matters not if others like it....although it is definitely a bonus when others do enjoy.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My tripod...which without it, I couldn't make those HDR and focus stacked pics I'm fond of...ha

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I have always preferred ultra wides and if stuck with only one lens that would be it.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
These days it's strictly available light but in my pro shooting days I had an array of portable strobes that were used inside and out...

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Sleep

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
The most memorable occurred in my Navy days when(stationed on a Helo carrier)it was my turn to hang out the chopper and photograph a russian spy ship after it plowed right down the middle of our formation. Soon as we circled all the ruskies who were fishin dropped their poles and went to GQ...but the real kicker was when I returned the head photographer said that I got the flight because they could have shot us down and claimed self defense and there'd be no retalliation...of course he was tiffed because his shots from the tower were a total bust(he used high speed film but forgot to set the ASA and massively over-exposed the lot). Just for the record, we were the best of friends and his comments were all in jest...

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have some pics up on Flickr/Mike Loy

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Shoot what brings you pleasure and or satisfaction and worry not about what anyone else thinks...if you do this I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised by how many others really like your work
