It's not the same Abe's of Maine and it's not in Maine anymore. Somebody bought out the name and moved it to NJ, I believe.

They were once on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Gone for many years. They were always shady.

Their prices aren't in line with anyone. $169 for a EN-EL 15 battery.
I don't know how this place can still be in business.

I've to used them but went to reseller ratings and did a search. Came up with this but as I said I've not used them and I also believe the advice given here is likely more reliable. Just though it interesting as it goes against the grain somewhat from what folks here are saying.

I bought my Tamron 180mm 1:1 Macro from them.
I got exactly what I ordered, an SP AF 180mm F3.5 DI lens.
I sweated bullets as I waited for the lens. And when I sent the warranty information online to Tamron.
NO problem! Not a hitch. That was my experiance with whoever it is that uses the Abe's of Maine name now.

Things I have learned:
Abe's of Maine - ISN'T.
They ARE located and shipping out of New Jersey.

Abe's of Main WAS originally in Maine, and highly reputable.
Only after the name moved to the New Jersey location did shady tactics begin.

My experiance was good. And I saved about $90 on my purchase over everybody else's offering for the same item.
(I paid $649 VS: $739~ for others)
Now, they are selling the "same" lens (but different) for $739.

I may have gotten lucky. But then again, it was just a lens in an OEM box changing hands.
Not sure I would roll those dice again. But I got what I ordered, and if I ever get a D7100, or a D90, or a FF camera that can drive the focusing screw it does Auto Focus. Proved that with the SIL's D90. Although he felt it would eat batteries because it ran fully back and out to refocus.
I got it and use it at 1:1 manual focus on a Macro rail.

Abe's of Maine (in Jersey).
Take your chances. :hunf:

Has anyone had any experience buying from Abe's? I'm looking at a Sony A6000 and they've got it for almost $150 less than B&H, my usual source.

I'm well aware of the old adage about "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't", but I've seen Abe's in photo mags for several decades and it's hard to see how they'd have survived that long without receiving some comments (as the recent threads on 47th St Photo have pointed out).

Any experiences or comments would be welcome.

Year's ago, in the film environment, I purchased from them. They had just moved from Maine to Brooklyn at the time. They tried to sell me a few things I did not need but politely declined. When they moved to New Jersey, I tried them once over the phone but got so much pressure to buy stuff I did not want or need, that I just hung up and ended up going to B&H. I would stay away, they really personify bait and switch.

Have no experience with Abe's. You mentioned 47 st photo. you must mean 42'nd st photo as 47 st went out of business years ago. It was the mainstay of photogear to the pros for decades in NYCity. 42nd attempts to confuse people into thinking that it is 47st. They are nowhere as reliable as 47st was.

I buy a lot of gear and I've heard that Abe's isn't quite as "honest" as you might expect. B&H doesn't always have the lowest prices, but their prices are fair. I always consider that slight price differential to be the cost of peace of mind. B&H has the very best customer service in the industry and if you have an issue with your purchases, their policies will prove to be worthy of their prices every time.

I can recount several purchases where B&H has come to my rescue. A new $3,500 body I purchased arrived and had a tiny black spec within the viewfinder... probably on the focusing screen. With a single call, they immediately re-shipped the camera without waiting for the defective one to be returned. On another occasion, B&H issued me a credit when the lens I purchased dropped in price by $100 the day after I bought it.

That level of customer care comes at a cost, however, which is the price difference between the rock-bottom deals you may find from vendors unlikely to match B&H's return policies.

My only experience was when I ordered a Nikon F100, a lens and a Nikon flash unit from them back about 2000 for a hunting safari in Africa. I specified the must all carry the USA warranty. The camera and lens did carry the warranty but the flash did not. I called them and was assured it would be OK and for me not to worry. I assured the salesman it was not alright and that I was shipping the flash back the next day and expected a correct flash immediately. In due time I did receive the correct flash. While it did work out I will never purchase from them again. It just isn't worth the hassle to me.

Never bought camera equipment from them but 55" LG smart tv at the time they had the best price anywhere about 2 years ago. Delivery was on time and in good shape.
