I just entered some of my photos in a 'juried' contest/exhibition. First time I've done this so I just put 'donate' on them....it's for a good cause. When I mentioned this to someone he said you should have kept it because now you have lost at least some of your rights to it.

Is that true? My name is watermarked on the photo, and name, date, etc in original exit. Did I make a big mistake?

LOL. 'exif' not exit. Darn auto-correct

You said "it's for a good cause". In that case I say forget it and hope it does some good. When you decided to "donate" it you did just that you "donated" it, you gave it away. No you didn't make a mistake you tried to do some good for a cause. I say GOOD FOR YOU!

If it's a good cause, good.

If not, not.

Cheers,

you still own the rights to the photo... unless they stated in their fine print that you were signing over the copyright (which I would like to think is not the case, but who knows).

Go back and read the fine print, you answer lies there.

I'd see it as you simply donated the print, not a big deal.

Thanks everyone. In my opinion, I just donated a copy of one of my photos .... Nothing more.

And since there was no small print to read (thanks mwac), I think I'm fine with this.

It's not like I think I'd ever make a bunch of money on selling this photo, but ya never l know.

Cosmo,
You never loose your rights to the photo unless you sell it. You are still the owner of the original. What you have lost is the ability to sell it as an exclusive.

only issue is will it show up on Ebay copied for sale. I always put a copyright sticker and signature on the back of the photo so that if it shows up for sale I can force withdrawal.

off the topic a bit, but what kind of sticker do you use?
Any worries about adhesive or signature bleeding through?

I get them pre printed. Last batch was from B+W. I sign on the margine at the bottom with a Koh-I-Noor (sharpie - like) pen.

Unless it shows up on eBay as CamObs indicated, it's still your picture. Donating it is a good thing. If you regularly sell your pictures, and it has a set value, I'd check with my accountant to see if you can take a deduction.

I often "donate" prints to a local charity for auctions. I've learned from experience that the print is open for bid/for sale, not the "negative." I retain the rights, unless I say in writing otherwise.
