Went hunting dragonflies and got these instead

I am monitoring a group of overwintering dragonflies on a local river, so every sunny day I try to get in a walk along the river and snap a few photos. Today I tried another locale which produced no insects, but these engaging little critters were reward enough.

Oh you lucky lucky! Otters are one of my favorite animals because they love to play! They are the most fun to watch.

Outstanding shots Anthony! What dragons were you hunting? Our season ended rather abruptly in October. I shoot about 90% dragons for our county survey. You don't see a lot of dragons or damsels posted here. Have a great day !

For the last three years I have observed Variegated Meadowhawks (Sympetrum corruptum) females over wintering on the Van Duzen River. they show up in November and disappear in early March. Despite frosty nights, they persist, sunning themselves on river bar rocks and low twigs on sunny winter days. No one suspected this behavior. I do post some sightings on OC.
