18 - 105 VR DX f3.5/5.6 Lens..

I know this is not Nikons best, but it is good enough for me. I dropped the camera and broke the mount flange on the lens. Is this something I can replace myself ( I am a good enuff handyman). The repair shop tells me it will cost almost as much as a replacement lens. If this is not too technical a challenge, can I get a mount flange on E-Bay or Amazon?

Had almost the exact same thing. My daughter borrowed my D90 (and still has it), dropped it and dented the corner of the back plate, but also broke the flange. I found a new backplate on eBay, sent the camera and the plate to Rick Riggins who did the replacement quickly and reasonably.(I could have but he could also test and check out the camera.)

But for the lens, I discovered that the replacement flange was not readily available and a replacement lens was only $125. It was just better to buy a used lens.

Maybe Rick has access to the flange also. I didn't think of that when I sent him the camera.

I have replaced the lens-mount on an 18-55 Nikon lens and it is fairly straightforward. There are instructional videos on YouTube that explain the process step-by-step.

There is even a metal lens mount available on e-bay if you are willing to spend 56 bucks.

Its not really all that tough if you are diligent and handy with very tiny parts. Here is the direct replacement, they are cheap:

MT is (as always) right!

The original Nikon replacement part is very inexpensive and an exact fit for your lens. I would stay away from the cheap Chinese knockoffs.

Why the slur on the Chinese nation. I think "cheap copy" would have been sufficient. The Chinese are the manufacturers for the whole world today, and they make some fine merchandise. Question. Do you know for a fact that the original part was not made in China?
