Yesterday I went on a photo shoot. I shot in RAW. I put my pics on the computer to learn my computer cannot read NEF files. I found a converter on the Internet. It converted all my files so I could view them. But after I closed the program and went into my pics they are still in NEF. What can I do? Is there a download which will convert them permanently? Or a download which can make my computer read NEF?

Thanks for your help. Please keep it simple as I'm not a computer expert. Thanks for your help. Have a wonderful day.

Charlene, what camera do you have, make and model, and what program/version do you use to view/edit your .nef files?
And what is the converter you got off the 'net?
If you'll post that information, we can be of more help.

When you went back to your photos after installing and running the converter, were they viewable NEF's? I'm thinking that maybe the program you downloaded installed some NEF viewing software.

A raw file cannot be over written, you have to save them as something else, such as jpg or png. You will still have the original intact.

Since you're working with NEF files, that means you have a Nikon camera. If you bought your camera new, chances are that it came with a disk containing the manufacturer's version of the NEF->jpg converter. If you bought it used or don't have the disk, you can download the program from Nikon.

Charlene, Your camera provider, Nikon, Canon or whoever has a free download that installs on Windows making it read and copy all nef files and allows them to be opened and viewed in Windows photo viewer and any other windows product. In addition, there are a lot of software programs that allow for the editing and conversion of nef to jpg, tif etc.
Nikon ships a cd / dvd with each camera that has a program called view NX2 which is a simple editor for nef and jpg.

Here is the complete Nikon offering.. The Codecs to allow windows to open nef are at the far right.

View NX2 and the others are in between. Mac software is also in the table

My camera is a Nikon d70. I have windows xp and use the "photos" that came with xp. I went to neftojpeg.com. I can't figure out if it installed a readable NEF file or not. After I viewed the pics I went back into my file in photos and I still couldn't see them.

If the pics were converted, all you have to do is save them to the folder of your choice. Make sure you save them as JPEGs, if given the choice. It's good to keep the NEF files for future use.

Use the free Nikon Application… Nikon Transfer 2 should have come with the camera.

I am afraid XP is going to continue to give you more and more troubles as other software titles drop support,… Microsoft themselves already has. eating you potentially open to security issues.

Meanwhile if the original images are important, burn them to a CD for potential future processing from this superior format…

Once you have converted a file to view it, save it (save as) a JPEG (or whatever) BEFORE closing the converter.

You did not mention the make and model camera you have but most of the better DSLR's have menu feature that will allow you to shoot in both RAW(NEF) and JPEG. Check it out!

Download Picasa, the version attached to this link will work with Win XP. You will be able to view your D70 files in jpeg format, store away the NEF files for when they are wanted again, and even do a little editing.
http://picasa.google.com/

The NeftoJpeg.com program outputs the jpeg to the same folder as the Nef file is.

So if you load the Nef files from your camera to MyPhotos > Today, after using the NeftoJpeg converter, if you do not click Browse, the jpgs will be stored side by side with the original nef files in MyPhotos > Today.
