Was killing time this Friday at Best Buy and saw the lens for $99. My first thought was 'non VR? yeah right!' But now I'm wondering.

Anyone use this one?

Was shooting at a local lake today and could have used the extra reach.

Same lens as the VR model, just doesn't have VR.

I have had one in my bag for several years. While it is to my go to lens, it does provide very good images if used properly. By that I mean either with a tripod, or if hand holding, and exposure of 1/300 sec or faster.

I will consider it--provided they still have it the next time I go.

Depends on their inventory. It is a discontinued lens and they discount those items heavily. They had the Nikon SB-900 flash units on closeout a couple weeks ago for $299, I hesitated and they sold them all out before I got back in.

I have that lens and use it quite a bit, if you're going to do a lot of handheld shots it probably would be prudent to use a fairly fast shutter speed!

After thinking on it a bit, I think I'm going to just spend the extra and get the VR version. I often have trouble holding the camera steady.
