I started with a Nikon D 40 and then a D 70 and now a D300. I never used my D70 much before going to the 300. My question is when I go on a shoot which camera would you take for a 2nd? I know in many ways the D 70 is a better camera but the D40 is newer and has more technology. I shot some pretty nice pics with the D 40 so I am leaning toward it but wanted some different opinions and why. I am not only carrying it in case somethings happens to the D 300 but having it set up with a different lens and settings so I can change back and forth. Thanks in advance.
Either one would make a good second body, but I think I would lean towards the D70 mainly for the lens compatibility. The D40 won't AF the non AF-S lenses, if you have any, and the D70 will.
I'd sell both the D40-D70's & buy a used D200 which are going for a very resaonable price, or get a D90. Stay away from nikons P series. I carry an S60 on my belt if weight is a problem & it does a decent job as a backup. If you have the $$$$ get a D7000 & you might use the D300 as your backup. I just got a D7000 & it performs great. I also have a D200 which is either a backup or my primary.

I have a D70 which I pretty much quit using once I got my D300. While in Yellowstone I used the D300 for wildlife and and the D70 for landscpaes. Made me wonder why I didn't use the D70 more. I would suggest using the D70 since both it and the D300 use compact flash cards.

Because of the flash cards and lens I think the D70 won out. Thank you all for your opinions. Funny how the answer was right in front of me and couldn't see it.
