Camera Image label assignment

I was wondering if there was a way to change the image label assigned by a camera. I'm a Canon user, and both the T3i and 70D assign images a label as IMG_xxxx. Since I use both cameras to shoot the same subject, oftentimes, I would like to be able to assign labeling that refers to the camera used, such as 70D_xxxx or T3I_xxxx. This would sure simplify image ID and filing.

Try this -

"...for the 7D you go to MENU, 3rd WRENCH and to FILE. I expect it to be no different on 60D."

You should be able to change the file names on both cameras, or at least the 70D. Search the camera manual for 'file name' to locate the instructions, if available, for the specific model.

I can't find any method to change the file names on the T3i and I think the 70D is similar. Higher end models (such as the 7D) do support this kind of functionality.

There are some approaches you could use. If you use EOS utility to download images then you can customize the folder names that files are created in to include the camera body type, even serial number if you wish.

I believe it is also pretty easy to use DPP or other software to do a batch rename of all the files in a folder. It's not as good as having the camera do it for you, but it may be a workaround to your problem.

Good luck

Peter, in addition to this, Canon users can also use DPP to update their copyright info.

You can do that with Nikon, So I would Imagine you could with Canon also.

Thanks. That wasn't the OP's question, however you correct. Copyright info can be updated directly in the camera, or with EOS utility, which is probably easier than using DPP unless you wish to modify a single image.

Isn't software wonderful!

Cheers

Thanks to all who replied-looks like neither the T3i nor the 70D support the image re-labelling functionality-guess I'll stick with separate folders for each camera.

Many years ago I got a program called Downloader Pro. It allows you to change file names when you download the images from your card. I find it really useful to have meaningful names on my files for future searching.

Download Pro allows you to specify a base file name, but also to add other data to the file name such as date, camera model, camera serial number (for those who use identical bodies for backup) and many other things.

I got this program maybe 8 years ago, so there are probably others out there that do similar things. It cost me $30. Totally worth it.

PS: it can automatically define the folder you send the images to. You can probably include the camera model or serial in the folder name.

You should find all of that in the Exif files of the images.

Yes, it's in the EXIF data, but how do you search for it or filter for it? I'm using Win8 and explorer doesn't find things in the EXIF data. Keywords, yes.

[edit] Explorer seems to find some things in the EXIF data but not others. It will find the camera model.
