Help with LR adjustment brush

When I use the adjustment brush on my desktop (its a Mac)
no matter what I seem to try none of the adjustments work, it as if it isnt working at all for some reason.

I have the monthly package from Adobe.

I recently watched the link that was posted today for the adjustment brush and decided to 'have a go' can any hogs out there help me with this.

Also does anyone know how to selective sharpening in LR?

Thank you.

If you have a portion of the picture "selected", most modifiers will not work. Click on "Deselect" and try the brush again

Click on the Adjustment brush, in the panel that opens, go to the "Flow" near the bottom of the panel, move the slider to 100, move the density to 100, try again. (Also make sure that Brush A or Brush B is selected, not the Eraser).

After you select the Adjustment Brush, move a slider like Exposure to an extreme position. Your brush strokes will be more obvious. Once the Brush area has been established, you can readjust the slider.
