With the help of many Hogs, Santa listened! D7100 plus, my one and only (for now) lens, also chosen with a lot of Hog-help: Sigma 17-50mm, f/2.8. With my owner's manual and another gift, "Understanding Exposure", Bryan Peterson (guess from where that recommendation came) I will be very busy. I am quite overwhelmed at this point. Thought I would share a few of my very first photos. These were taken today at one our county parks. The donated property was once a working farm and, fortunately, all the original buildings are beautifully maintained, along with the original farmhouse. There are horses, pigs, cows, sheep and a beautiful surprise. I have never uploaded photos here. I hope its OK. I don't have a website or flicker account. Thanks again for all of you who help in what was a very b decision for me. Arlene

I love new toys! But more important is the photographer, in my view. That Peterson book will really help you with the fundamentals. After you have absorbed it, come back for more recommendations. My own journey has taken me to Scott Kelby and Tony Northrup's books as well as lots of online tutorials and plenty of kind help from here at the Hog. You'll be amazed at how quickly that feeling of being overwhelmed will melt away. Practice, practice, practice and then practice some more! Nice first shots...

Congrats on the new camera! :-D After I collect a couple of more lenses, I am going to be adding a D7100 to my collection. Great camera! Enjoy!

Norman, I'm use to point and shoot. This is a challenge, but it is something I have always wanted to pursue but needed to keep on the back burner. There are some advantages to retirement!

Arlene, if you think you are in love with it now, shoot with it for a year. It will become a part of you.
Your images are sharp, clear and well done. Great job!!!

Phil

Arlene, congrats on the new camera.
We have here locally a 6 acre property that has about a 100 peacocks on it. It was donated to the City with the stipulation that the woman's beloved peacocks be taken care of.
Since you're kinda new, check out my post about Composition Beyond the Rule of 1/3's. Have fun. ;-)

SS, I will check it out. I was hoping he would open his feathers, but basking in the sun on this cold day was all I was going to get.

Arlene, I bought my D7100 a little less than a year ago, and the difference it has made in my photography is marked! I agree with the other posters when they say shoot with it for a year. I'm not even at a year, and I can see the changes already.

I love my D7100, too! :)

Fred, I checked out your Flicker page. You have some beautiful images. We will be in St. Augustine, Fl. for Feb. & March. I have taken tons of photos there with a Panasonic ZS19 and I think they are nice. I can't wait to go back with my D7100.

Thank you for your kind words, Arlene. Make sure you post some of your photos from St. Augustine; it's a wonderful place!

Now this makes me happy to see. I absolutely LOVE my D7100, yes eventually I may wish to go Full Frame, but I truly am not finding any rush to do so now, my camera has performed well at every task I have put it to, the only failings being operator error.

Now I just need to clean my dirty sensor
