Hi - I'm brand new to the forum and I was hoping you could give me some advice. I have a Nikon D70 and am thinking of upgrading to the D5100 - any thoughts on that camera? I was also considering the Canon Rebel T3i - supposedly better resolution...I'm not a professional (obviously), but this is more like an obsession than a hobby for me.
Also, I have the two lenses that I use with the D70 (Nikkor 18-55 & 55-200), can/should I upgrade them as well? Thanks!

If your lenses are AF-S lenses they will work on the D5100. If they are NOT AF-S they will NOT autofocus on the new body, but will meter and manually focus.

I abosolutely love the Canon Rebel T3i. Can't say enough about how wonderful this camera is for me. I know Nikon owners are equally passionate about their brand, and I'm sure rightfully so. If you have money invested in Nikon lenses I would think you would stay with Nikon. But, I don't know their models, etc. etc.
Nikon d7000 if you plan to get more into the hobby, pros also use this camera,if you are spending less then 800 the canon or
Nikon lower line models are fine, the newer cameras can pretty much do what you need

Yes. The D5100 would be fine, but as mentioned you will limit your lens choice. D7000 would be a great choice. Forget the Canon....
I'm not sure about those lenses but I am assuming that they are "kit" lenses that aren't high end. If that is true, then you really don't have a lot invested in lenses and you could go either way - Canon or Nikon. You can sell your lenses and camera body on eBay and recoup some of you money and purchase anything you want. As far as brand is concerned, you'll have to make that decission yourself. As you can see, the Nikon user will recommend Nikon, and the Canon users will recommend Canon. Either camera system is good. I'd say that the Canon is slightly more economical (less expensive). You see more Canon lenses at sporting events, Paparazzi celebrity shoots and the like and Nikon is probably more seen in modeling, fashion shoots. This is my humble opinion, not set in stone. Also, Canon has gained popularity for it's awesome video capabilities. They've been using the 5D MII for actual TV and movie productions for a while now. They have been replacing $70,000 movie cameras. As far as nature photography, I've seen about an equal number of both cameras out there.

If you are into Nikon gear stay with it. I have all Canon gear and love it but realize that Nikon is also excellent. If you changed, you would be going thru a learning curve to get up to speed. Go for the Nikon D5100.

Id recommend you take a trip to your local camera store (not a big box store but a real camera store). Tell the folks in the store what you have and what direction youd like to take your photography. Not knowing exactly what you have and what condition its in its very difficult accurately state that you should go one way or another. Hold the cameras that youre interested in, Im sure they have a demo unit so take some shots, ask about lens availability and maybe some instructional classes the store may offer. Do some investigative research with some hands on look at the features that are important to YOU. Having said that Im a Nikon guy so guess what Im going to recommend, but thats based on what I liked and what was right for me. Go find out whats right for you hell you could wind up with a Sony.
