I was asked to take a few shots of a friend in a concert . She is a performer and I wanted to see what I could do. I rented the Tamron 24-70 2.8. OMG! I fell in love with it! I have posted a couple of images here. The truth is the lens made me look like I knew what I was doing. Even at the extremes it worked so well.

So now I am thinking I want it have it in my bag all of the time. But the price is too high for me right now without trading out all of my EFS lenses.

My thinking is to trade in all of my lenses: Nifty 50 f1.8, 18-55 F3.5-5.6 and 55-250 f4-5.6. All kit lenses, for this incredible lens. of course I'll have to pitch money into the deal.

Is this folly, or a good thing?

I don't think its folly. In fact, I've done the same thing to get a new Sigma 18-300mm. The 24-70 will cover the first two lenses. Well, you'll be a little short on the wide end losing 6mm, but I wouldn't give up the 55-250mm. You'll have nothing to cover that range.
IMHO.

Only you can decide. Only you know the answer. The 24-70 is my most used lens but consider depending on what you normally shoot there may be a lot of missed opportunities between 70- 250mm. ;)

I was thinking about getting a teleconverter to get to the higher MMs

You have just learned the difference between "kit" glass and Pro glass, as well as why the Pro glass costs so much more. Its all about image quality! Anybodys 24-70mm F2.8 will outperform your kit lenses, get it and use it. The only problem then is that you will have to save up for a 70-200mm F2.8 to get more range! ;)

I just got a Kenko 1.4 TeleConverter for Christmas. Not the same as a lens with the same range and you'll lose some f/stops. Best to keep the 55-250mm until you can afford the 70-200mm f/2.8 as MT suggests.

I would keep the 50 mm, sell the others.

Chefneil, welcome to the Hog. Answer to your question: It is definitely folly, and it is a GREAT thing! I do admire your attitude but I would recommend you keep the nifty-fifty, unless it is a deal breaker. Chances are you will miss (at first) the 250mm range, but the value and versatlity of the new lens will overpower any remorse. When you are able, please post some of your results. GL

How often do you use each of the others? I recently downsized my go-bag and only put the 2 lenses I use most often in the new bag. I carried a second bag with my other lenses on several outings, just in case. I never once pulled a lens out of the second bag.
Once you get the 24-70 you won't want to use any of your other lenses so you won't miss them if you sell them. I'd keep the 55-250 for the range and sell the rest. (And you'll probably find yourself wanting to upgrade it as well.)

Since you would get very little for the 50 I would keep it and get rid of the other glass. Really for the vast majority of shots unless you are a birder or wild life shooter you don't need much more than 70mm.

Do it. You love a constant aperture lens. Do you use the 50mm?? I hardly use zoom lenses.

B&H has the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS HSM for $519. It's a very good lens and it's less than half the price.
